Something to get exidered about
Last week, I had the opportunity to visit Monterrey, Mexico for a preview of Siemens’ exiderdome. exiderdome is a traveling automation technology expo and learning laboratory for Siemens customers in the manufacturing and commercial facilities segments. exiderdome is made up of 50 cargo containers, assembled into a 3-level, 10,000 sq. ft. modular building. Siemens touts that exiderdome contains more than 137,000 products, organized by product family. For an engineer, it is nothing less than impressive.
Some of you may recall the Siemens exider train that traveled across North America in 2004. According to Siemens executives, the train helped increase the awareness of Siemens in the Unites States. Because of the train’s great success, Siemens decided to expand the concept to a dome. As you can see from the picture, exiderdome is not really a dome. The name “dome” was used because in German, the word “dome” means “where people come to meet.” Where the train was limited to destinations by rails, the dome can travel virtually anywhere, either by barge or truck. The dome can also stay at each location for a longer period of time, making it more conducive to hosting events, training, and distributor and partner participation.
exiderdome first toured through Asia in 2005 and 2006 with stops in China, South Korea and Thailand. In 2007, exiderdome traveled to Russia, then back to Asia where it stopped in Taiwan. By popular demand, exiderdome went back to China for a second visit. The American tour started in Mexico in January 2008. Monterrey was the last stop for exiderdome’s 4-city Mexican tour. From Monterrey, exiderdome will travel to Calgary where it begins the U.S./Canada tour to include 9 U.S. and 5 Canadian cities, over a 12-month period.
The U.S. grand opening for exiderdome will take place in conjunction with Siemens Automation Summit at the Navy Pier in Chicago on July 21 – 25, 2008. From Chicago, the dome will travel by barge to Detroit, Boston and New York, as well as four cities in Canada. Travel by barge eliminates the construction and assembly needed at each stop. It’s interesting to note that the barge has only four inches of clearance in the smallest of the locks along the St. Lawrence Seaway. From New York, the dome will be transported by trucks to Charlotte, Orlando, Los Angeles, Denver and Houston.
Only Siemens could or would bring this experience to the automation industry. As you can imagine, exiderdome is no small investment. Siemens shelled out 4.5 million euros, just to build the dome itself. The entire campaign, including all tours, logistics, and promotion, will cost Siemens a whopping 40-50 million euros. The products in the dome are updated every 6-8 months and the content of the dome is tailored for each individual country and/or industry demographic. To date, more than 130,000 people have been through the dome. It is anticipated that Siemens will draw a larger cumulative audience of North American automation professionals than any other automation or manufacturing-related event.
According to Peter Loescher, CEO of Siemens AG, “The U.S. is the most important market for Siemens.” Other than exiderdome, Siemens has made significant investments in four U.S.-based manufacturing and support locations, including Norwood, OH; New Kensington, PA; Grand Prairie, TX; and Spartanburg, NC. Siemens is definitely committed to the U.S. As a result, they are pulling out all the stops, or at least nine exiderdome stops.
