Going wireless, embedded and green

This week, National Instruments kicked off its annual NIWeek with a keynote address by Dr. James Truchard, President, CEO and Cofounder, and Tim Dehne, Senior Vice President of Research & Development. In a dynamic presentation, loaded with multiple product demonstrations, Truchard and Dehne highlighted a few of NI’s latest developments, including enhancements to LabVIEW, wireless DAQ, embedded single board RIO, and green initiatives.

LabVIEW 8.6 builds on the inherent parallel nature of graphical programming by delivering new tools to help engineers and scientists take advantage of the benefits of multicore processors, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and wireless communication. By using the latest version of LabVIEW, engineers now have a single platform to increase test and control system throughput with multicore processors, reduce the development time of high-performance FPGA-based advanced control and embedded prototyping applications and more easily create distributed measurement systems to acquire data remotely.  Read more on LabVIEW 8.6.

National Instruments announced 10 Wi-Fi and Ethernet data acquisition (DAQ) devices, extending NI measurement hardware and software platforms to wireless remote monitoring applications. The new wireless and Ethernet DAQ devices include built-in signal conditioning and direct sensor connectivity for electrical, physical, mechanical and acoustic signals. Engineers can combine NI Wi-Fi DAQ with the NI LabVIEW software platform to meet their wireless structural diagnostic, environmental and machine condition monitoring application needs by reducing cabling costs and increasing flexibility without compromising performance.  Read more on Wireless DAQ.

National Instruments’ Single-Board RIO devices offer engineers a low-cost, integrated hardware option for deploying embedded control and data acquisition applications. The eight new sbRIO-96xx devices combine an embedded real-time processor, reconfigurable field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and analog and digital I/O on a single printed circuit board (PCB), making them ideal for applications that require flexibility, high performance and reliability in a small form factor. Engineers can use the NI LabVIEW graphical system design platform to customize NI Single-Board RIO hardware as well as develop all aspects of their embedded systems for increased productivity and shorter time to market. Read more on Single-Board RIO.

Measure it. Fix it.  According to National Instruments, Green engineering is the use of measurement and control techniques to design, develop, and improve products, technologies, and processes for environmental and economic benefits. National Instruments enables green engineering with the graphical system design platform, providing measurement, automation, and design tools to measure and understand real-world data, and then to correct or fix the problem by designing and developing more efficient products and technologies.

Truchard states that 25% percent of their customers are going green through the optimization of machines and processes.  Much of the equipment and technology used in today's manufacturing plants was originally designed and implemented decades ago. There has been an ever-increasing emphasis on efficiency, performance and quality control. NI leverages recent advancements in PC-based measurement and control technologies to provide industrially rugged and cost-effective systems to complement and integrate existing automation systems and machines.
