Hannover Messe - Visitors welcomed at the door with a sardine sandwich
By Bill Lydon, Automation.com
Housed in five former production buildings, the 1947 Hannover Messe went down in history as the "Sardine Sandwich Show" because each of the visitors was welcomed at the door with a sardine sandwich. Despite volcanic interruption, the 2010 Hannover Messe again showcased excellence in engineering, manufacturing, and innovation, with an exhibiting level back to the pre-financial crisis level of 2008.
Integrating the bus
By Ian Verhappen, InTech
A control system is only as good as its infrastructure. Approximately 80% of installed smart field devices are being underutilized. Having the right infrastructure enables better control and higher return on investment. Continuing developments in hardware and software will enable better access and communication with smart field devices.

Determining value - Jim Pinto’s pricing paradigm sounds like a win-win situation for both seller and buyer (Jan/Feb InTech). My question is: How can “value” be determined?
Defending Detroit - I object to the notion that the Detroit automakers "... forced cars they produced down the public’s throat."
Key design components of final control elements
By InTech
The deadband, resolution, speed, and turndown of final control elements determine control system performance. Whether a valve or variable frequency drive has a better dynamic response depends on the application and adherence to best practices. Special variable frequency drive cables and installation considerations are needed to prevent damage and interference from electrical noise.

Tuning of Industrial Control Systems, 2nd Edition
By A. B. Corripio
Suitable for beginners, this book takes a practical but systematic approach to tuning. The aim is to provide insight into tuning procedures rather than a series of formulas to be memorized. The author gives helpful rules of thumb to speed the learning process during field training. The second edition includes numerous examples of tuning, including the effect of hysteresis in flow control loops, averaging and tight level control, cascade control of a jacketed chemical reactor, feedforward control of a heater, and loop interaction and ratio control in a blender.
Troubleshooting: A Technician's Guide, 2nd Edition
By William L. Mostia, Jr., P.E.
Troubleshooting loops and systems is something all technicians must do, but that few truly master. This newly revised edition draws on the author’s long experience as an instrument and electrical engineer and his maintenance expertise to provide a detailed look at the skills and knowledge required for troubleshooting. Interspersed with a wealth of practical detail and real-world examples are Mostia’s no-nonsense discussions of what a good troubleshooter needs to know.
