Ensure Readability of 2D Bar Codes
By Microscan
Paper presents FAQs and answers on reading 2D bar codes and symbols, such as Data Matrix. It explains that only a Data Matrix Verifier can measure the quality of the printed or directly marked code against parameters defined by symbol verification standards.

Mobile Warehouse Automation Optimization
By Thomas R. Cutler
Effective warehouse automation systems can navigate, lookup, and validate entries with the scan of a single barcode. No longer will the lot number accidentally end up in the location field. By Increasing the visibility and accuracy of warehouse operations, lean efficiencies can be realized.

Lighting the Way for Vision
Machine Design, February 2008
By Jeff Schmitz, Banner Engineering
An object or target must have enough optical contrast for a vision sensor to see it. Put another way, there must be a detectable change (or delta) in the light received from the target compared to everything else in the camera’s field-of-view (FOV). Controlled lighting creates this contrast.

How to Equip Robots With Readers
Assembly, February 2008
By Jarid Feldner
Bar codes and other symbols provide a dependable, inexpensive means of validating assembly steps, preventing errors, tracking work in process, and building model variants. Mounting readers to robots makes the process of scanning bar codes that much faster.

Machine Vision Takes a Global Look
Control Design, February 2008
By Loren Shaum
Machine vision systems are getting more compact, faster, with better resolutions, and can be adapted quicker to production changes without much knowledge.

Embedded RFID: 'RFID as a Feature'
Design News, February 2008
By Martin Payne
It's likely that in the near future, most products we buy will include RFID. Embedded RFID applications can enable innovations in a wide range of industries including aerospace, chemical, hospitality, health care and retail.

Application Stories

Data Matrix symbols help medical manufacturer track parts
By Microscan
Biosite, manufacturer of medical test panels, encodes ID tracking numbers in a bar code on each panel. It had problems reading a long Code 39 bar code--even with a machine vision system--so it changed to a Data Matrix code, which it reads easily with Microscan Quadrus MINI scanners.

Tank Program Employs Visual Tracking Software
Assembly, February 2008
DRS Laurel Technologies refurbishes Bradley Fighting Vehicles for active service in Iraq and Afghanistan. It inspects, repairs and certifies 100 wire harness assemblies in the hull and turret of each vehicle. DRS uses Inspect visual-inspection software from ASI DataMyte to provide a detailed visual record for each cable as it is processed.

Vision Sensors Check Laser Weld Quality
Assembly, February 2008
The Renault LHA factory employs a machine-vision system from Cognex to detect any tiny holes that may exist in the laser welds used to assemble bodywork components.

Code reading with In-Sight saves Sony money
By Cognex
Sony in Malaysia is using the In-Sight 5110 for code reading on PCBs for their MP3 players. Each PCB passes along a conveyer on 9 production lines and is marked with a Datamatrix code containing product information in 10 characters measuring only 1 mm x 1 mm in size.
