System Eliminates Need for Handheld Scans

BMW’s plant in Regensburg, Germany, has long used tracking devices to monitor its production processes. Now, it uses a tool assistance system from Ubisense and a location identification system from IBS. The system continuously evaluates the spatial relationship between the line’s automated production systems and the vehicles being processed.

Market for Image sensors expected to grow slowly in 2010

According to a report from Strategies Unlimited, the market for image sensors will decline to $6.4 billion in 2009, a drop of 11% from 2008 and the first decline since the analyst firm began tracking the market in 1997. Growth is expected to return in 2010, but the average growth rate will be in the single digits in coming years, following more than a decade of 22% compound annual growth.

Despite the global downturn, there has been a surge in orders for RFID in 2009, according to a new report released by research company IDTechEx earlier this year. The company has forecast that the global RFID market will rise 5% this year to $US5.56bn, up from $US5.25bn in 2008.

Siemens wins contract for Italian airport renovations

Siemens Mobility won a maintenance contract from SEA, the operators of the Milanese airports Malpensa and Linate. Siemens will be implementing a system for the maintenance management that will be using RFID technology in the spare parts management sector and in the identification of the maintainable items.v
USMC issues $4.4m contract for asset tracking solution

The USMC is planning to use RFID at Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton and Okinawa, Japan. The system will track in-transit, in-storage and in-repair assets across the USMC’s entire supply chain.
