Software-Defined Instrumentation
Design News, August 2008
By Kevin Bisking, National Instruments
Next-generation test systems must be flexible enough to support the wide variety of tests that differ among convergent products and they must be scalable enough to accommodate a larger number of tests as new measurement functionality is required. Software-defined instrumentation is the essential differentiator for meeting this test challenge.
How Control Engineers Can Deliver the Most Value
By George Buckbee, ExperTune
Control Engineers are a scarce and valuable resource for process plants. When applied to the right tasks, control engineers can easily deliver 10X their annual salary in results. This paper discusses the various tasks that a control engineer typically performs, and examines ways to help focus these valuable resources on the areas that yield the greatest returns to the business.
Biopharmaceutical Process Control: Part Two: Process Modeling
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, June 2008

First order plus dead time, high fidelity and multivariate statistical models are valuable tools for batch operation improvement. These online models can accelerate design of experiments and process design.
The uses and merits of process simulation
South Africa Instrumentation & Control, July 2008
Establishing the financial gains associated with a process simulator is best achieved by quantifying the losses associated with not having one: loss of design quality, loss of operator competence and loss of production time. The long-term advantages of process simulation then become evident as investments that can save money.
Object architectures in an increasingly services-oriented world
Control, June 2008
By Paul Miller
COM and CORBA were technologies for distributed objects. These are now being supplanted by services-based technologies and for good reasons.

Boiler Optimization and SCR Systems: Reducing NOX, Managing Tradeoffs
Power Engineering, July 2008
By Rob James and Peter Spinney, NeuCo Inc.
Artificial intelligence-based optimization software is gaining traction as a tradeoff management tool. Optimization is particularly good at understanding the cause and effect impacts of multiple actions taken across multiple systems interacting in a dynamic environment. NeuCo, for example, is working with Babcock Power to more closely tie plant-wide economic optimization with SCR controls.
Simulation reduces costs and risks for RTS Flexible Systems
Process & Control Today, July 2008
Visual Components industrial simulation software is playing a key role in the design and manufacture of automated pick and place robotic systems for packaging operations made by RTS Flexible Systems Ltd. The simulation software is being used to help optimise configurations before proposals are shown to potential customers and ensure that, once built, systems work right the first time.
Endless Fun With IEC 61131
Control Design, July 2008
By Jeremy Pollard
Columnist looks into an IEC 61131 application and discovers the main benefit of IEC 61131 is that “it’s a standard,” even though customers don’t know what it is. Vendors can take advantage of the complacency of some users because of the intrinsic value of the word “standard.”
