Communicating Communications

Welcome to our Industrial Communications newsletter.

You may notice a certain amount of overlap between this newsletter and previous ones, such as Automation Software or Machine Control. The reason is that some of the news, resources and events apply to both disciplines.

We are trying very hard to avoid what we see on other on-line newsletters, where the same products, news and features are repeated endlessly, to the point where the newsletter becomes useless. We feel that such newsletters are no better than Google, which sometimes gives you the same reference a dozen times.

You may also notice that our newsletters are quite a bit longer than those from the print magazines, which sometimes have only a dozen or so items. That’s because we are determined to make Automation.com your one-stop resource for everything on the topic. Our goal is to make it unnecessary for you to Google “industrial networking” and search other sites.

Therefore, our newsletters will bring you all the recent news on a topic, while its related portal (see list on the left) will contain a plethora of information gathered over several months. As noted in the previous newsletter, we’re just getting started, so the newsletters and portals will contain much of the same information at first. As time goes on, the portals will become a huge repository of topical information.

This particular newsletter is quite long, mainly because Industrial Communications is a “hot topic” these days. We have the ongoing Ethernet squabbles over which protocol to use, a similar squabble over wireless communications, a raging conflict over intrinsic safety and redundancy issues on fieldbus, and increasing use of Internet capabilities by everything from sensors to HMI/SCADA systems. Modern devices contain built-in Web clients and servers, so you can interrogate devices and systems from your home PC, laptop or cellphone.

Moxa Technologies, this month’s Industrial Communications newsletter sponsor, supplied the first featured white paper on one of the hot topics: “Industrial Ethernet Infrastructure—Key Selection Criteria.” Other topics covered include fieldbus, peer-to-peer, electrical subcontractors, sensor gateways and more.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve on these product portals or topical e-newsletters, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Enjoy the rest of this Industrial Communications update!

Maintaining connections
By Mark Lamendola, Contributor, Industrial Networking
There are plenty of issues that cause network headaches, but never assume your electrical subcontractor is familiar with routing and terminating network connector cables, even if they do it all the time.We might not think much about the technology behind each connector, such as which style or termination method to use, but all can affect bandwidth, reliability, and total cost of ownership.

Ethernet wise to the enterprise
By Jonas Berge, president, Fieldbus Foundation Marketing Society, Singapore
Traditionally, the automation system has been an isolated island—not connected to anything. However, new methods of operation require remote access for visualization and supervision of the controls through a live link. This requires network access to the automation system from other parts of the enterprise.

Upgrading Small RS-232 PLCs
Application note from Moxa Technologies describes how to let small PLCs communicate over the Ethernet. Small PLCs, such as the Allen Bradley Micrologix family, have only one RS-232 serial communication interface, and may be located in remote areas, making communication possible only via conversion to RS-485 or a modem (telephone, leased line, radio, or satellite). This is often prohibitively expensive or impractical. This note describes how a serial device server allows the PLC serial data to be transported over the Ethernet very economically. The PLC can now be located anywhere where there is network access.

Packaging Machine Builder uses Ethernet Switches
Here’s how one of the world's leading machine builders of filling, labeling, and packaging machines uses Ethernet communications. Each of these machines is made up of a combination of PLC controllers, HMI control panel, and numerous I/Os, relays, sensors, and counters. The builder uses Moxa Ethernet switches, which support multimode fiber and are capable of transmitting data up to 5 km, making it easier to configure and support reliable, high-speed data transfer between machines or to the central control room.

Oil Refinery Uses Ethernet in Hazardous Environments
A petroleum company recently upgraded the remote control and monitoring system in its Belgium manufacturing site. Since the monitoring cells are either in or next to high temperature refinery areas, the devices used for this project are required to operate under the Class 1 Zone 2 standard. Another issue that must be considered is the reliability of the devices. The operating temperature in the cells is high, and the refinery is usually unmanned, so that in general no one will be available to troubleshoot the situation when a device fails. The answer was to use Ethernet switches over a fiber optic network.
