It’s not the I/O, it’s the roadblocks

Based on what we see crossing our editorial transom, and what we find for you on the Internet and in print magazines, dealing with I/O has changed considerably in recent times.

You still have to deal with noise and interference, wiring and terminations, zero and span, accuracy and resolution, calibration, and all the other engineering challenges involved in connecting sensors, transmitters and actuators to I/O boards, A/D converters, and multiplexers. Not much has changed in this area. From the sensor to the I/O card, it’s much the same.

What has changed is how you connect all that I/O to automation and process control systems. In olden days, you simply ran twisted pairs to bring analog signals in from the field, or an RS422 cable to connect an RTU, or you plugged cards into a PLC network or distributed network. Life was simple.

Today, you have multiple choices, and not many of them are easy. If you use Ethernet, which one is best? If you use fieldbus, which one? The same goes with wireless. You have multiple choices in all these areas.

We allegedly live in an “open” industrial society, where all the proprietary networks and I/O cards have been replaced by open-architecture, plug-and-play systems. Unfortunately, the Big Vendors always find a way to make their products proprietary one way or another. This means you have to choose among “open but proprietary” interfaces, and hope you select one that will be around for a long time.

As we noted in our recent Process Control Newsletter, updating legacy control systems is a trend in North America and Europe. Many companies are adding I/O and upgrading control systems and software to increase production, improve maintenance practices, and comply with an increased need for real-time plant information.

Adding I/O in an existing plant can be difficult, for two reasons: First, it is extremely expensive to add wires to existing conduit, especially if it runs underground. Second, all the modern I/O and interfaces don’t help if the legacy control system can’t deal with it. Many legacy DCSes, for example, cannot accommodate HART, fieldbus, Ethernet, wireless or any other kind of high falutin’ interface. If the I/O doesn’t come in as a twisted pair that wires into ancient I/O cards, or can’t plug into the old proprietary network, the old DCS can’t deal with it.

All these decisions and problems are roadblocks to progress. While modern I/O technology offers plenty of advances in speed, reliability and accuracy—as you will see in the products listed below and on our Industrial I/O portal—roadblocks make it more difficult than ever to connect I/O to automation systems.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve on these product portals or topical e-newsletters, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Enjoy the rest of this Industrial I/O update!

The intrinsically safe fieldbus has arrived
By Dr. Dave Rizzo
The capacity barrier of FISCO has now been significantly surpassed by a novel split architecture design that has already proven itself in the field. For plants that process chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petroleum and other products whose production may involve hazardous environments, it appears that recent technological improvements in split architecture systems design have finally delivered what FISCO promised: intrinsically-safe segment capacity virtually indistinguishable from non-hazardous fieldbus implementations.

Wireless Technology is Ready for Industrial Use
By Gary Mathur, Moore Industries-International, Inc.
Wireless works in a plant, but you'll want to be careful regarding which "flavor" you choose. There are many flavors of wireless, and an understanding is needed to determine the best solution for any particular application. Wireless can be licensed or unlicensed, Ethernet or serial interface, narrow band or spread spectrum, secure or open protocol,Wi-Fi…the list goes on. This article provides an introduction to this powerful technology.

Why Use Temperature Transmitters Instead of Direct Wiring?
By Gary Prentice, Moore Industries-International
Today's highly functional microprocessor-based field-mount temperature transmitters are comparable in price to direct wiring strategies. When the additional advantages of using intelligent transmitters are factored in, you can save considerable time and avoid maintenance headaches. This is especially true when the measurement point is located a long distance from the readout and control system.

Isolation Technologies for Reliable Industrial Measurements
Voltage, current, temperature, pressure, strain, and flow measurements are an integral part of industrial and process control applications. Often these applications involve environments with hazardous voltages, transient signals, common-mode voltages, and fluctuating ground potentials capable of damaging measurement systems and ruining measurement accuracy. To overcome these challenges, measurement systems designed for industrial applications make use of electrical isolation. This white paper focuses on isolation for analog measurements, provides answers to common isolation questions, and includes information on different isolation implementation technologies.

Distributed I/O: The Future Of I/O
By A-B Journal Staff
Increased integration, technology migration, and distributed solutions are driving I/O to become more integrated and flexible. This evolution continues as manufacturers demand smaller, faster, and easier to install control systems. The I/O industry is transforming the appearance and function of I/O devices on the factory floor to meet these needs. Among the most noteworthy changes are collapsing architectures, smart devices, intelligent I/O and packaged controllers, and smaller size.
