Welcome to the third edition of the Machine Control Update
Those of you who have been with us from the beginning know that this newsletter contains the most relevant information about what’s going on in the machine control business since our previous newsletter, and the related machine control portal contains everything that’s been released or published on the Internet since January 1.
By receiving the newsletter, subscribing to the RSS feed, or visiting the portal, you can keep up to date on everything in the machine control world, almost in real time.
We are delighted to see that you are taking advantage of our services. In March and April, Automation.com had nearly 400,000 visitor sessions each month (all-time records for us).
It’s interesting to note that 25% of visitors are referred by search engines, but 75% visit us directly. That means you know we are here, and we are becoming your primary source of automation information. Of all the web sites in the industry covering automation news and products - including sites related to the top industry magazines - we are ranked the highest.
One reason is that we do all the research for you, and bring you all the relevant information being published worldwide. You don’t need to subscribe to a dozen or more print magazines to keep up with machine control technology. Come to our portal, and you will see it all.
Although we can count visitors and see where you go, we do not track you personally while you are on the site. We believe in Safe Surfing. You can browse around for hours today, secure in the knowledge that you won’t be getting emails or phone calls from a dozen or more vendors tomorrow. We know that some sites require you to register first, and we all know what that means: your name will be reported to the vendors. Not us. Because we believe in Safe Surfing, we will not sell your email address to anyone.
If you are interested in specific kinds of products, we invite you to subscribe to the RSS feeds for one or more portals. If you subscribe to the RSS feed for machine control, then you will see everything we put on the Machine Control portal on a daily basis.
Enjoy the rest of this Machine Control update!

Modular manufacturing steers machine control choices
Control Design, April 2007
By Loren Shaum, Contributing Editor
To improve flexibility, machine builders are incorporating more distributed control and remote I/O. This article focuses on machines with multiple stations.
There’s safety in machines
Control Design, April 2007
By Joe Feeley, Editor
Safety has moved away from being considered a difficult-to-do afterthought once a machine was built and/or installed and/or a costly necessity that adds complexity and limits machine operations.
Closed-Loop PID algorithms in motion/motor control
Control Design, April 2007
By Dr. Ernst Dummermuth, consultant
Author explains PID and says to use differential feed forward for numerical controls, and integral feed backward for trajectory control of motion.
Pressure-Resistant Proxes: New Generation Proximity Switches For Hydraulic Applications
Sensors, April 2007
By: Peter Heimlicher, Contrinex and Tom Horstman, US Automation
As the hydraulics industry continues to advance, higher pressures are being used in more applications. When end-of-stroke signals are required, a switch located in the end cap is the most reliable sensing choice. The sensor industry has evolved to produce reliable end-of-stroke sensors that can operate in today's high-pressure environments, with safety margins approaching 40%.
Using Vibration Analysis to Detect Early Failure of Bearings
Process Industry Informer, March/April Issue
Dr. S. J. Lacey, Engineering Manager, Schaeffler (UK)
Vibration produced by rolling bearings can result from geometrical imperfections during the manufacturing process, defects on the rolling surfaces or geometrical errors in associated components. Noise and vibration is often perceived to be synonymous with quality and often used for predictive maintenance.
Cable goes Twist-Friendly
Machine Design, March 2007
Tom Collen, Northwire Inc.
Most cable is not designed for repeated bending, twisting, and movement. The problem is that repeated flexing can eventually cold harden conductors to the point of failure. Similarly, the friction generated between various internal components of a moving cable can generate enough heat to compromise the insulation and jacketing over time. The implications of these problems are obvious for maintenance and machinery uptime. |

Extreme Machine: Compact Precision Robotics I
Control Engineering, April 2007
By Steve Scheiber, Control Engineering
Schneider Packaging of Brewerton, NY, won CE’s “Extreme Machine” contest with a robotic packaging machine that's small, nimble, and easy to use. The end-of-line robotic handling system occupies a miserly 300 sq ft.
Extreme Machine: Compact Precision Robotics II
Control Engineering, April 2007
By Mike Babb, Control Engineering International
The European winner of CE’s “Extreme Machine” contest was Stork Townsend B.V. Its QX family of co-extrusion sausage makers is massive: 10 m (33 ft) wide, 6 m high, and up to 30 m in length make it the largest of the machines in the contest. It is powered by 60 variable speed motors and 18 servomotors.
In a flash: Innovator Awards 2007
Control Design, April 2007
By Jim Montague, managing editor
Description of winners of CD’s machine design contest, including a film extrusion machine, a press brake, and an in-line filler machine.
Less is more on high speed scribing machine
Process and Control Today, April 2007
By John Houston, Editor
Robotix in Rugby, UK, has developed a high speed production line for scribing traceability serial numbers onto wheel rims for earthmoving equipment. This uses a single Hoerbiger-Origa rodless pneumatic cylinder in the dual critical roles of positioning the scribing head and holding the rim steady in the workstation.
Aylesbury Automation aligns correctly for Kenwood
Process and Control Today, April 2007
By John Houston, Editor
The potential for separation and misalignment of components during manufacture of Kenwood water filters, has been overcome by the design and construction of an automatic rotary indexing machine from Aylesbury Automation Limited.
Eight heads are better than one
Control Design, April 2007
By Jim Montague, Executive Editor
Park Industries in St. Cloud, Minn., recently spent two years developing its Velocity decorative edge shaper/polisher machine for natural stone and stone-like materials. The new machine uses a conveyor to present 3x6 or 3x8 ft slabs of granite to a bank of 13 spindles driving one cutting/shaping head and seven polishing heads, which move in and out at 190º around the edge of the slab. These heads are directed by cam profiles and functions in a motion controller to produce six or more different decorative edges. |
