There is, however, a degree of dependency on ac or emergency backup power for all the alternatives, and 13 emergency diesel power generators failed.

Wind Power Second in U.S. Generation Capacity

Wind power is second in new generation capacity in the U.S., a close second behind natural gas, according to the AWEA.. With 5,116 MW added last year, U.S. wind installations now total 40,181 MW, according to the U.S. Wind Industry Annual Market Report.
California will require 33 percent renewables by 2020

California will mandate that 33 percent of the state’s energy come from renewable resources by 2020, thanks to a bill passed March 29. If other states follow suit, the passage could have large implications for the U.S. solar industry. California currently gets 15 percent of its electrical power from renewables.

Trans-Elect has proposed a $5-billion undersea power grid that would stretch some 350 miles from northern New Jersey to southern Virginia. The lines could transmit as much as six gigawatts of low-carbon power from wind turbines back to the coast, which would match the capacity of 10 average coal-fired power plants.
