Process Control: Don’t forget the engineers

You may have noticed a recurring theme in my editorials of late. In recent weeks, I’ve been to the Expertune/TiPs Users Conference, ABB’s Automation World, ARC’s Forum, and the Invensys Process Systems Customer Conference.

After these events, I reported how speakers talked about extracting useful data from the process control system for optimization, financial purposes, plant economics, collaborative manufacturing strategies, and so on.

When you add these editorials together, it seems that the speakers are no longer concerned about HOW we do process control, but what all the real-time data means to bean-counter executives, upper management, plant managers, and other “suits” working far from the plant floor.

Everybody seems to take the mechanics of process control for granted. “Of course we can control that,” they seem to be saying, “but what’s in it for upper management?”

All that high-level accounting is laudable, because it helps to keep process plants in North America more efficient and productive so the bean-counters don’t close them down and move operations to the Third World.

Our newsletter sponsor, the OPC Foundation, is a major leader in showing you how to accomplish high-level integration. It holds meetings and seminars all over the world (see sponsor box at the top left), where you can learn the mysteries of ERP, analytics, diagnostics and all the other advanced functions that OPC makes possible.

But we shouldn’t let the emphasis on accounting and ERP and optimization take away the importance of good, old-fashioned process control design and engineering. I like to think that the vast majority of our readers are control engineers, not “suits,” and I think that what you do every day is extremely important. In my opinion, figuring out how to control and instrument processes is just as important as feeding data to ERP systems.

Therefore, our Process Control Portal and this newsletter bring you relevant news, products and technical articles that help you do your job: control processes. We found articles on controlling solar-hydrogen plants, the mysteries of PID, how to apply fieldbus in hazardous locations, and so on. We found so many useful articles, we can’t include them all here in this newsletter. But if you go to the portal, you’ll find a treasure trove.

The need to employ high-level OPC applications is just as important as knowing how to tune a PID controller, and we bring you the best of both.

Most monthly print publications in this industry devote a single article (if that) to the mysteries of process control. We, on the other hand, search the world for those kinds of articles, and bring them to you here. If you subscribe to this newsletter or the RSS feed, you’ll keep up to date on what’s new and exciting in process control.

Enjoy the rest of this Process Control update!
