Making safe waves in hazardous areas
HazardEX, March 2009
By John Hartley, Extronics
As wireless devices become more reliable and cost effective, there is growing interest amongst the process industry as to the benefits to be found from enabling such devices to be used in hazardous areas. However, unlike most industries this is not a simple task. Installing wireless networks in hazardous areas requires careful, expert planning and execution.
Pressure relief systems 'neglected'
Oil & Gas Engineer, February 2009
A recent process industries site survey by ABB Engineering Services compared the valve set pressure against the pressure at which they actually operated. Of the 341 valves tested, 68 (20 per cent) failed to lift within 10 per cent of the cold set pressure, and 13 valves (4 per cent) failed to lift at 1.3 times the cold set pressure.
O & M Pressure Relief Systems
Power Engineering, February 2009
By David Melcher, Dresser Consolidated
Pressure relief valves (PRVs) help ensure the reliability of equipment, help plants maximize output and help control operating costs. They also are crucial safety devices, typically serving as the last line of defense in an overpressure situation, protecting equipment, facilities, products and people. Here’s how to keep them running right.
Wireless Technology Unlocks Possibilities
Power, February 2009
By Jeff Becker
Modern wireless systems improve productivity, monitoring activities, and safety at power plants by enabling the right people to be at the right place at the right time. Wireless technology can put hard-to-access process and asset information at your fingertips, wherever you are, to enable more accurate and timely decisions.
Burner Management System Safety Integrity Level Selection
By Michael D. Scott, AE Solutions
Identifying the required amount of risk reduction is extremely important, especially when evaluating existing legacy burner management systems. Selection of an overly conservative Safety Integrity Level can have significant cost impacts. These costs will involve increased Safety Instrumented System functional testing or complete removal/upgrade of the existing burner management system.
