Making the Most of Thermal Imaging Data
Power, April 2009
By Gary Updegraff
One of the tools available to identify areas of possible failure is the thermal imaging camera, which can capture an image and rapidly display areas of varying temperatures in different colors without contact. This article discusses planning, operation, and documentation procedures designed to effectively use a thermal imaging camera as a critical element in an effective reliability program.

Solid-state micro-energy cells uniquely enable energy harvesting
Industrial Embedded Systems, March 2009
By Tim Bradow, Infinite Power Solutions
Energy harvesting is great, but it's better if there is somewhere to store the energy. Advanced energy storage technology is creating new design opportunities for small sensors, transmitters, and MCUs, but batteries aren’t good enough.

Power over Ethernet: Myths, Mystery, and the Facts
By Paul Wacker, Advantech
PoE is a technology that permits a standard Ethernet connection to transmit both data and power over a single Cat5 cable. Currently, industrial PoE applications are limited mainly to wireless access points, video surveillance cameras, and machine vision systems, but sensor applications are not far off. As industrial controls manufacturers continue to embrace Power over Ethernet, more devices will be designed to be PoE compliant.

A Guide to Transformer DC Resistance Measurements
By Bruce Hembroff, Manitoba Hydro
Measuring a transformer's DC resistance from one external terminal to another can reveal a great deal of information about the transformer. In addition to the obvious faulted winding (i.e., an open winding or shorted turn), more subtle problems can be detected.
