Application Stories

Automotive Data Acquisition System uses Industrial I/O
By Data Translation
A component manufacturer needed to acquire 24 analog and 8 digital inputs during in-car-testing at speeds up to 160 mph and over rough roads. They use two DT9836-12 data acquisition USB modules in tandem and an industrial notebook computer.

Paddington calls in Micronics
Control Engineering Europe, April 2008
Network Rail called in a flowmeter expert to help it get to the bottom of rising water bills at Paddington Station. Micronics was faced with the daunting task of surveying an old and complex system that has changed considerably due to development activity. Six Portaflo 300 instruments were used to gather 24 hour consumption/load profiles for selected hot and cold water services.

Laser Sensors Can Measure Many Parts of an Assembly
Assembly, April 2008
By John Sprovieri
For assembly applications, the most common technology is the laser triangulation sensor. This sensor consists of a pulsed laser and a linearized charge-coupled device (CCD) that can provide point-to-point measurements or 2D profiles. The sensor can measure length, width, height and depth.

Marine vessels start detecting the vibes
Process and Control Today, April 2008
Preventing maintenance problems using condition monitoring systems has obvious advantages to manufacturing plants. However, other sectors, such as the marine industry, are now starting to see the benefits of implementing similar vibration-based detection systems onboard ships.

Selecting the Right Bus for Your Digitizer/Oscilloscope Application
By National Instruments
These instruments are available in a wide variety of form factors including USB, PCI, PXI, and PXI Express. Each bus has unique features and advantages, so determining the right bus for your application is important. This paper explores considerations when choosing a bus, such as cost constraints, performance, and future expandability.
