MotionInfo.com (www.motioninfo.com) is a new online motion control resource that offers a series of valuable new tools for selecting and sizing (coming soon) various types of electric motor-based products including motors, linear actuators, gear-motors, motors with matching drives, integrated motor drives, and motors with many different integral components. The site was launched by Motion Tech Trends, a leading electric motor and motion control marketing and technology consulting firm, who claims to offer users an unparalleled search experience.

The Selector Tool
ComponentSelector (CS), the first level tool, is an expert system that helps users select components based on system specifications input by the user.  Each system specification can be ranked by importance ensuring the search results focus on the user’s specific needs. The CS system attempts to mimic a knowledgeable motion application engineer so the best matches are based on motion intelligence imbedded in the search algorithms. Since the CS tool is independent and objective, search results are ranked with a calculated matching percent based strictly on how well a product’s specs match a user’s need. From the search results, users have access to detailed datasheets with all relevant device characteristics, specifications and other data usually provided only in a hard copy catalog. And unlike other tools, CS does not force users to filter by technology before their search so they can be sure the system will select the best technology/components for their application.

Ease of Use
Users simply select the specifications of interest and then click the “Begin Search” button. CS allows users to enter specifications in mixed units so they don’t have to calculate conversions in advance. The system can even display meaningful results without entering min/max spec values. To expedite the search process, CS offers an Application Wizard that provides canned searches created in advance by their own internal technologists that pre-selected and pre-ranked specifications based on specific applications or application categories. Users just add their target min/max values and Go. Users can also save their own searches to run or re-run at a later time.

User Benefits
With ComponentSelector, users can save days to weeks worth of time, over existing ‘search by spec’ systems, by providing applicable products in rank order of best first. In addition, because the system already contains specification sheets of products from most suppliers, users will save weeks of research time. With 24/7 availability to the online tool, users can access the knowledge of motion experts at any time and from any location.  In addition to ComponentSelector, the site offers ServoSizer (coming soon), Application Assistant and Design Assistant.
