ISA - Change the name to represent the industry

The proposed name change of ISA (to "International Society of Automation") is up for a vote again during ISA Expo in Houston, October 14-16, 2008. Last year, the change was voted down, but I have yet to hear a compelling argument against the change. And there are many reasons for the change. If ISA is truly the global society of automation professionals, then its name should reflect its cause. It's time for a change!

Study questions RFID metal problems

A recent report claims to have busted the myth that radio frequency identification (RFID) does not workon metal. The “Metal Mount RFID Tag Benchmark” findings show that some of the more popular tags designed for metal are not the top performers. While the metal-mount tag performance has improved substantially over the past two years, the benchmark reveals some vendors clearly outperform their peers.

Extronics will supply a wireless network for hazardous environments at Total’s UK-based refinery The intrinsically safe and explosion proof wireless network will deliver work scheduling and position status feedback to operators on more than 1,500 manual valves involved in the offsite operations for display on a process mimic. Windows Mobile PDAs and RFID tags can be used by operators to enter the status of the valves and feed the information back to the process mimic.
