The less-is-more approach to six-axis robot design
Machine Design, May 2008
By Kenneth Korane
The less-is-more approach centers on designing cable-management systems for six-axis robots — including cables, hose, tubing, carrier, and connectors — in three separate segments. This differs from the current industry practice of using long, single-piece cables and hoses rigidly attached to the end-of-arm tooling.
Don’t Come Unhinged Over Enclosure Design
Machine Design, October 2008
By Jim Ford, Southco
When designing or specifying cabinets and enclosures, hinges play a key role in determining whether or not the product lives up to expectations.
Using Structured Cable Solutions For BAS
Automated Buildings, October 2008
By Jim Sinopoli
Using structured cable in a BAS environment is different than its use in a typical data network. The cable topology and the location of the end devices are different. More consideration has to be given to signal loss budgets, devices placed on a link or bus, and the cabling distances supported.

Air vacuum pumps cope with cable contaminents
Process & Control Today, November 2008
Thorite solved a sticky production problem for B3 Cable Solutions of Blackley in Lancashire. B3 needed new vacuum pumps to replace 8 reliable but obsolete piston vacuum pumps, used in a cable lamination process, but most pumps clogged. PIAB P6010 COAX air-generated vacuum pumps worked.
Eyeing Connections
Vision Systems Design, May 2008
By Winn Hardin
Fast-con, crimp, or lug wire terminators come in a nearly endless variety of shapes and sizes and are used extensively in the automotive and other electronics markets. At a connector-manufacturing facility in Spain, a pair of PPT Vision 5200 IMPACT cameras with tethered C40 processors, photoeye trigger, telecentric optics, mirrors, machined metal supports, and a Rockwell Automation Micrologix PLC supervise the operation.
