Invensys Integrates P&F Intrinsically Safe I/O

By Bill Lydon - Contributing Editor

Invensys has moved from a “build everything attitude” that had been a hallmark of the company to partnering with strong suppliers in areas that are not core competencies. The tight integration with Pepperl+Fuchs for Intrinsically Safe I/O shows the Invensys commitment to best of breed partners. The solution is certified for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous environments.

The heart of this is a new Intrinsically Safe Communications Module (ISCM) has been developed that provides the integration between the Pepperl+Fuchs Remote I/O modules and the I/A Series System over a standard Foxboro 2Mbps HDLC fieldbus. This enables tight integration between the I/A Series System and the Pepperl+Fuchs line of Intrinsically Safe I/O modules that is configured with standard I/A software.

This seamless integration allows the I/A systems to view and interoperate with the P+F Intrinsically Safe I/O-modules as if they were 200 Series I/O modules. This solution uses standard I/A Series software blocks, standard configuration tools (ICC, ICCAPI or IEE) and monitoring via SMDH or Infusion System Manager.

Each individual standard P+F Remote I/O module is emulated and mapped to the respective 200 Series I/O module (FBM). The units connect directly to the 2 MBps (redundant) HDLC Foxboro Fieldbus and the P+F modules are auto configured requiring no manual configuration or additional configuration tools. P+F parameters are mapped into the Foxboro parameters (emulating the FBM functionality).

The intrinsically safe modules are hot-swappable with built-in redundancy in communication modules, power supplies and bus interfaces.

IPS offers the integrated solution on HART capable modules so I/A series system users can manage intrinsically safe operation of any vendor's HART field devices. And because Integration with I/A Series technology also brings compatibility with IPS's FDT-based Field Device Manager; users can set up, commission and maintain smart devices within a common engineering environment.
