Siemens introduces Simatic Thin Clients
June 22, 2007 - Simatic Thin Clients are used as compact terminals for the visualization and input of data. The thin clients are connected over Ethernet with a server on which the application software for human machine interfacing runs. The rugged, hard-disk-free and fan-free devices in degree of protection IP 54 are suitable for all applications with more than one operator station. They are available in 10" and 15" TFT display versions with 64K colors and touch screen operation.

The new Simatic Thin Clients offer a high degree of vibration immunity and have a USB port for connecting an external keyboard or mouse. They are optionally available in degree of protection IP 65. Startup is simple: The thin client requires only an IP address and a host device such as a Simatic Panel, a PC or a server, with which it is to communicate. Connec-tion to the host takes place via the integral Ethernet interface. No other installations are required. Administration and maintenance costs only arise centrally at the server since the applications are not installed on the thin client.

The thin clients can be connected to any servers with the Microsoft standard Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), and to the Simatic WinCC flexible process visualization system or Simatic HMI Panels using the Sm@rtAccess software. Both connection facilities are installed onboard as standard. The thin clients also enable Web access to HTML pages. Other applications such as office applications like MS Excel or SAP can be viewed and operated via the terminal services of the RDP.
