July 11, 2007 --ARLINGTON, Va. - OpenSplice Version 3 is a next-generation implementation of the OMGs Data Distribution Service (DDS) that provides end-to-end QoS with predictable performance, high availability and fault tolerance across large numbers of heterogeneous computing nodes for mission-critical systems. OpenSplices performance, scalability, and real-time service delivery cannot be matched by commodity middleware, such as XML-based Web Services or J2EE/JMS-compliant messaging. OpenSplice Version 3 must be considered by any systems integrator looking to guarantee mission-critical performance in large-scale SOA-based integration projects.
In this context, mission-critical defines systems where end-to-end QoS is mandated by system users. Well-known examples of such mission-critical systems include air traffic control systems, industrial SCADA, and many mil/aero systems. In these types of systems the right answer delivered too late becomes the wrong answer. These highly predictable service requirements are also increasingly seen in financial systems (e.g. performance-sensitive, distributed, automated trading systems) and in enterprise integration where high-performance mission-critical systems are integrated into the back-office IT environment. While Web Services or J2EE/JMS middleware can provide integration of generic business applications, OpenSplice is better suited to connect performance-critical and mission-critical systems together.
One of the most complex and expensive challenges in the integration of large-scale, distributed, mission-critical systems is ensuring the validity and timeliness of data exchange, i.e. delivering the right information to the right place at the right time. Ensuring this end-to-end QoS across loosely-coupled software services, often running on a wide variety of enterprise and embedded computing platforms in a SOA, is essential to successful deployment. OpenSplice (which is compliant with open standards derived from real-time computing) addresses these mission-critical system requirements.
OpenSplice Version 3 features:
Complete compliance and coverage of the Object Management Groups DDS specification - including the Data-Centric Publish Subscribe (DCPS) profile and the Data Local Reconstruction Layer (DLRL) profile
A true fault-tolerant information backbone with fault tolerant durability of non-volatile data and content-aware querying and filtering of subscribed information
Seamless cohabitation and native connectivity with other middleware including Real-Time Java, DBMS, SOAP, XML, and CORBA®
The OpenSplice Tuner tool offering total and dynamic (on-the-fly) control of local and remote deployed OpenSplice based systems
Information/application/deployment modeling with a Model Driven Engineering (MDE) tool-suite extending UML with DDS-specific roundtrip modeling and deployment.
OpenSplice Version 3 also delivers unrivalled performance and MDD tools support:
Superior scalability (across unlimited applications, computing modes, topics)
Superior real-time behavior by urgency-based (latency-budget) and importance-based (priority) network scheduling
Superior fault-tolerance by insulating faulty or misbehaving applications from the network
Superior tooling for design/development/deployment - with round-trip engineering and dynamic configuration, monitoring and management capabilities.
OpenSplice V3 is ideal for large-scale, mission-critical real-world systems, with its superior scalability and performance, complete standards coverage, fault tolerance, seamless middleware connectivity, modeling and deployment tools, said Dr. Douglas C. Schmidt, a Professor of Distributed Computing at Vanderbilt University and PrismTechs CTO. For SOA-based integration that must meet demanding end-to-end performance requirements, OpenSplice should be an obvious choice for systems integrators.
Hans vant Hag, OpenSplice Product Manager at PrismTech, added, In our opinion, OpenSplice Version 3 is simply the best COTS implementation of DDS ever produced, but we are also mindful of the needs of evaluators and early adopters. So at launch we are also announcing low-cost entry-level packages for developers of smaller systems and for the early stages of larger deployments. Developers will be able to select the most powerful and scalable product on the market but without large up-front costs. No developer wants to face scalability issues in phase two or phase three of a systems deployment.
