Data-Linc introduces hybrid serial-Ethernet modems

BELLEVUE, Wash. — October 26, 2007 — Data-Linc Group announced SRM6220 for the 900 MHz and the SRM6320 for the 2.4 GHz license-free bands. These long-range, Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum radio modems meet or exceed the prior technology.

Features include Ethernet bridging, selectable MAC (Media Access Control) address filtering and dual Ethernet/CAT5 connectors for straight or crossover cables. All radio networks form an Ethernet bridge between Master radio Ethernet devices and one or more Remote radio Ethernet devices. RF network performance is improved by a switchable MAC Filter in each radio that learns MAC addresses of Ethernet devices connected to its wired side and only forwards packets across the RF link of devices not on the wired side.

Like prior SRM modems, the range capability comes with reliability and performance in the license-free 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz ISM bands. The SRM hybrids use the same high performance, ultra-reliable Smart Spectrum technology that ensures exceptional data integrity - even in high noise environments. The SRM modems serve as the backbone for numerous installations worldwide. It continues the SRM Family tradition of allowing each modem to be configured for Master, Remote, Repeater or Repeater/Remote modes. The SRMs’s compact design with universal back panel or optional DIN rail clip (The mounting bracket holes are identical to SRM6x10E.), allows easy mounting.

“The product-update is grounded in an in-depth understanding of the way our customers' needs set the trends in how industrial automation and instrumentation data communication products are developed. Data-Linc offers a broad range of options to facilitate customers’ ability to purchase the solutions that best meet their unique applications, The newest SRM6220 and SRM6320 modems features Ethernet with serial tunneling capability that is compatible with most protocols, like DF,” stated Hal William, Data-Linc Group’s General Manager. “Today, we’re offering an enhanced product with a number of unique customer benefits such as backward compatibility, which means that one of these new modems can replace an Ethernet SRM6210E or SRM6310E or be added to a legacy SRM6210E or respective SRM6310E network. In addition to the ease of replacing “retired” modems, backward compatibility also allows the user to move from legacy equipment into today’s technology as need and budget allows with the added benefit of reduced cost from requiring only a single “replacement/backup” modem.

Data-Linc has also simplified setup, configuration and operation. SetLinc, Data-Linc’s proprietary software is simple to use via use the Ethernet or the dual serial ports (RS232 or RS485). To further simplify installation, the SRM6320 radio network communication can be readily determined by pinging the Master or the Remote. This is also an invaluable troubleshooting feature for determining if the communication link is functioning.

As with its predecessors, the front-located LED status lights on the SRM6x20 modems provide direct visual access to critical diagnostic information and the LAN light adds confidence that the modem is operating correctly. The auto-negotiate feature simplifies the dual Ethernet/RJ-45 connectors for straight or crossover cables. Auto-negotiate means the port will automatically determine how to connect to the interfacing cable - it identifies polarity then crosses or goes straight without manual operator input thus giving the user simplicity of operation, verified by the LAN light.

Because all Data-Linc products are custom configured to interface with connecting equipment and offer field proven performance, they are ready to hook-up and use in the field. That’s great news for distributors and system integrators who want to provide their customers with the best possible options for data networking and ease of installation regardless of the manufacturer of the interfacing equipment.”

The industrial hybrid modem is here. Data-Linc’s SRM6220 Ethernet-serial modem allows the user to move from legacy equipment into today’s technology with a modem that can interface via RS232, RS485 or Ethernet ports. Its user-friendly features and benefits continue to provide customers with what they have come to expect from Data-Linc— ease of installation, ensured RF integrity, versatility and robust performance in the most challenging of industrial environments.
