RuggedCom Inc., Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada, November 27, 2007 – RuggedCom released an upgrade of the RuggedRouter network router and new feature set to address the specific needs of mission critical applications in harsh environments, such as those found in substation automation and “Smart Grids” for electric utilities, intelligent transportation systems, and advanced control and automation for industrial processes.
The new RuggedRouter features include:
Performance Improvements: 10 times increase in throughput over previous versions
GOOSE Tunnels: Support for substation automation IEC61850 protocol over a Wide Area Network
Precision Time Protocol: Network time synchronization via IEEE1588, GPS, and/or IRIG-B
Link Backup: Automatic failover for Wide Area Network interfaces
Improved Help System: Extensive online help text via an easy to use interface
“Our products are specifically designed for mission critical applications found in harsh environments and we continue to add many industry specific features to all our network infrastructure products," explains Roger Moore, VP of Engineering for RuggedCom. “For example, the RuggedRouter is the only network router that provides specific intrinsic support for GOOSE messaging found in the IEC 61850 standard, a very important feature for substation automation applications.”
The RuggedRouter is an industrially hardened network router and cyber security appliance with integrated router, firewall, and VPN functionality. The RuggedRouter is used to create highly reliable wide area networks and provides effective cyber security to secure IP-based local area networks against cyber attack from both internal and external sources. Ideally suited for electric power utilities, the industrial plant floor, and traffic control systems, the RuggedRouter is designed to protect and secure SCADA system networks connected directly to the Internet, or within a company's Wide Area Network (WAN) or Local Area Network (LAN).
As with all RuggedCom products, the RuggedRouter is RuggedRated for harsh environments. RuggedRated products: meet or exceed a wide range of industry standards; provide a high level of immunity to electromagnetic interference and heavy electrical surges; feature a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C (no fans); can be powered from a variety of sources (12VDC, 24VDC, 48VDC, 88-300VDC/35-264VAC); and have high MTBFs and reliability characteristics. In addition, for applications requiring high availability, the RuggedRouter provides the option for integrated dual redundant power supplies, which have the unique ability to have each power supply fed from different voltage levels and/or sources. All of these features allow the RuggedRouter products to be placed in almost any location for great installation flexibility.
