Emerson introduces ELITE Coriolis flowmeter for custody transfer
BOULDER, COLORADO (February 7, 2008) – Emerson Process Management announces the high capacity Micro Motion ELITE Coriolis flowmeter that is ideally suited to address the demands of fiscal custody transfer applications. Combined with its unmatched measurement and reliability performance, the new Micro Motion meter is the largest ELITE Coriolis ever introduced, perfect for challenging, high flow measurement.

As the price of crude oil and other hydrocarbons climb to record levels, users have a new urgency to conduct fiscal transfers with the highest possible precision and reliability. Even small measurement deviations need to be eliminated to avoid potential allocation uncertainty. Transfer systems for crude oil and hydrocarbons typically require high capacity flow solutions capable of handling large volumes of product flow in the shortest time possible. Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis technology is well established for applications requiring precision measurement performance and reliability.

With the introduction of the new Micro Motion ELITE High Capacity Coriolis meter, Emerson delivers unmatched performance and reliability to measurement applications requiring 10” (DIN250) or 12” (DIN300) process connections. With a maximum flow capacity of 2250 tons/hr, this introduction dramatically expands the application range of Micro Motion ELITE meters.

The Micro Motion ELITE High Capacity Coriolis meter has been tested with crude oil and other liquid and gas hydrocarbons in accordance with American Petroleum Institute (API) procedures. In addition, the internationally respected Dutch metrology institute, NMi, has also certified a type approval for the new meter for use in fiscal transfer applications.

Globally, a custody transfer approval is only typically granted following a witnessed test conducted in accordance with OIML (International Organization of Legal Metrology) standards. International performance requirements for flow accuracy and repeatability of hydrocarbons are established by such standards as OIML R117. The Micro Motion ELITE High Capacity Coriolis meter has been tested under the supervision of NMi, and has conformed to the standards demonstrating flow performance on volume and mass flow at better than +/- 0.1% with repeatability.

Combining compliance to API, OIML and NMi standards with local custody transfer approvals from countries as far ranging as China, Canada, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Japan, Emerson’s new Micro Motion Coriolis flowmeter has demonstrated its readiness to meet the needs of high capacity custody transfer of crude oil, gasoline, diesel and other liquid and gas hydrocarbons globally.

When transferring large volumes of crude oil or other hydrocarbons in a custody transfer application, system reliability is second only to flow measurement performance in importance to users. Modern custody transfer systems consist of automated measurement solutions used to control hydrocarbon loading or unloading. In the past these systems used turbine or positive displacement (PD) flow meters to make flow measurements. Recently, however, users have recognized that eliminating rotating components within measurement systems is a best practice leading to higher reliability.

Devices like PD or turbine meters depend on rotating components as part of their basic functioning. Using no moving parts, Emerson’s Micro Motion Coriolis meter is not subject to the wear or performance drift that the rotating components of a PD or turbine experience over time. Embracing a highly reliable best practice solution from Micro Motion has delivered the long term reliability users require for high capacity custody transfer systems.

Micro Motion Coriolis flowmeters lead the process manufacturing industry in quality, measurement performance, and reliability, and are part of Emerson's broad range of intelligent, digital field devices that power the PlantWeb digital plant architecture. Further cost savings, increased plant availability, and enhanced safety and environmental compliance are achieved when the flowmeters are integrated into the PlantWeb digital plant architecture.
