WiMAX in Europe Facing a Brighter Future Where Technology-Neutral Spectrum Is Available

Spectrum at 3.5 GHz has been allocated across Europe for fixed wireless services using WiMAX. In the next few months we will see new spectrum being licensed for mobile WiMAX services at 2.6 GHz. If the European Commission gets its way, this may become a pan-European trend. Mobile WiMAX will then be able to compete against 3G as well as cable and DSL. But for the moment, the future remains uncertain.
3G Cellular to Capture 30% of M2M Market

ABI Research forecasts that 3G modules will achieve only a 30% penetration of the M2M market by 2012, and will become the technology of choice only where bandwidth demands and economics dictate; "future-proofing" will play a smaller role in 3G M2M market development over the next five years.

Motorola to cut 3,500 jobs to improve margins

Motorola plans to cut 3,500 jobs in the first half of 2007 to reduce costs and help it return operating margins to the double-digit percentage range. The world's second-biggest maker of mobile phones outlined the plan to cut 5 percent of its 70,000-strong work force after reporting that fourth-quarter profit fell by 50 percent, hurt by a sharp drop in phone prices amid stiff competition.

GE Industrial will acquire the assets of Rochester, NY-based Microwave Data Systems (MDS), a subsidiary of Moseley Associates and a world leader in industrial, wireless, and networking solutions. The transaction is subject to customary government approvals and is expected to close in January 2007.
