BP's Refineria de Castellón Selects SimSci-Esscor's ROMeo Solution for Naphtha Complex Real-time Optimization Project

The solution will result in significant benefits to BP through the adoption of "right-first-time" manufacturing philosophy to meet the challenge of strict new EU 2005 environmental regulations

LAKE FOREST, Calif., May 12, 2004 -- Invensys Process Systems, a world leader in industrial process control, and BP Plc, one of the world's leading petroleum and petrochemicals companies, today announced the start of a unique project agreement. Under this agreement, the two companies will jointly implement the ROMeo rigorous on-line modeling and optimization solution from Invensys' SimSci-Esscor unit at the BP Refineria de Castellón, in Spain.

The solution will be engineered and commissioned using a combined BP and Invensys project structure. This tightly integrated solution, incorporating several reactor models from third parties, will enable BP Refineria de Castellón to minimize costs and enhance profitability, while improving unit yields, production flexibility and meeting future environmental constraints.

"Historically, the operational set-points of our naphtha complex remained constant, even when equipment limits or feed qualities demanded a change to those directed from the plan," said Alvaro Remolar, advanced control head at BP Refineria de Castellón. "With the advent of technologies such as ROMeo we can execute the optimizer several times per day to recognize operational changes and update key decision variables as required. In addition ROMeo's open-architecture allows for easier integration of third party reactor models and a more sustainable solution overall."

SimSci-Esscor's ROMeo (Rigorous On-line Modeling with Equation Based Optimization) software is designed to enable plant engineers and management to model process units and optimize operations on a plant-wide or complex-wide basis.
