Deutsche Messe appoints Oliver Frese to its managing board

May 14, 2013 -  The Supervisory Board of Deutsche Messe AG (DMAG) has appointed Oliver Frese to its four-member Managing Board.  Effective May 1st, the 45-year old executive will take over responsibility for the world’s biggest IT show, CeBIT, as well as for the Hannover exhibition grounds and on-site construction plus the DMAG subsidiaries “Messegastronomie Hannover” and “spring Messe Management”.  Oliver Frese succeeds Frank Pörschmann, who left the company of his own accord due to diverging views on the future strategic alignment of his areas of responsibility.  Mr. Pörschmann will remain associated with the firm in an advisory capacity.

Mr. Frese’s successor as Senior Vice President for HANNOVER MESSE was also decided at the Supervisory Board meeting: Marc Siemering (42), previously project manager for the Automation sector at HANNOVER MESSE, will take over the post.

The Chairperson of the Supervisory Board, Hannover City Treasurer Marc Hansmann, commented that “the shareholders wish to expressly thank Mr. Pörschmann for his strong commitment to Deutsche Messe and his success in further developing CeBIT.”  Mr. Pörschmann had come to Deutsche Messe from IBM in 2010. From the beginning his duties included responsibility for CeBIT, first in his capacity as Senior Vice President and subsequently, as of April 2012, as a member of the Managing Board.

Dr. Hansmann continued: “Mr. Frese has impressively demonstrated his ability to carry out his new responsibilities by virtue of his success in running HANNOVER MESSE the last few years, and we are delighted he will have an opportunity to bring his competence and expertise to bear in the new position.”

Apart from personnel issues, the Supervisory Board also dealt with the planned construction of a new multifunctional exhibition hall, Hall 19/20.  In June 2012, the Board had already voted to erect an entirely new hall.  A renewed vote on the project had become necessary on account of erroneous cost calculations, which had emerged over the course of further planning.  As a result, at its meeting on Tuesday, the Supervisory Board was faced with the question of whether to considerably reduce the scope of the original construction project to stay within budget – 40 million euros – or continue with plans for a multifunctional hall at a new cost of up to 58 million euros.

The Supervisory Board voted in favor of retaining the initial construction plans, in particular in view of the new structure’s anticipated useful life of 30 years.  “The new multifunctional hall will substantially strengthen the ability of the Hannover Exhibition Center to compete internationally to host exciting guest events and innovative productions,” declared Dr. Wolfram von Fritsch, Chairman of the Deutsche Messe Managing Board – de facto the starting shot for commencing work on the new exhibition hall, which is now scheduled for completion at the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015.  The first step will consist of demolishing Hall 20 in just a few weeks’ time, to be followed by the launch of new construction in late autumn 2013.

Tuesday was the first meeting of the Supervisory Board in its new composition.  Based on the shift of power following the recent state elections, the new SPD/Green state government has appointed several new members to the Deutsche Messe Supervisory Board.  The State of Lower Saxony is henceforth to be represented by State Justice Minister Antje Niewisch-Lennartz, State Economics Minister Olaf Lies and State Finance Minister Peter-Jürgen Schneider.  Economics Minister Lies has also taken on the role of Vice Chairperson of the body.  Taking over for Dr. Hans-Peter Keitel, outgoing President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), new BDI President Ulrich Grillo now occupies a seat on the Deutsche Messe Board of Supervisors, as of May 1st.
