ABB announces Analyze IT Continuous Gas Analyzer AO2000-Limas11UV

October 202003
A new standard in emission monitoring

Frankfurt, Germany, October 17, 2003 -- ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has developed the Limas 11UV analyzer as part of the Analyze IT AO2000 series. The Limas 11UV, based on photometer technology, features the ability to measure NOx down to ranges of a few parts per million. Limits for the emission of air pollutants are stricter than ever, and will be even more restrictive in the future. Reducing emission levels of NOx, one of the most dangerous pollutants, is a major objective in environmental protection.

The ABB Limas 11UV analyzer is the first photometric analyzer that combines the low-detection-limit advantage of CLD (Chemiluminescence Detectors) and the well-known advantages of photometers. The Limas 11UV also allows for the first time (for many applications) the simultaneous measurement of NO, NO2 and NH3 if required. Although NH3 is not such a critical pollutant itself, it plays an important role in the de-NOx process (SCR optimization). In addition, the Limas 11UV eliminates the drawbacks of the common CLD-methods.

The key features of the Limas 11UV analyzer include:

•The light source: an electrodeless discharge lamp (EDL). The radiation of this lamp contains in particular the wavelength for resonant absorption by NO molecules. This UV resonant absorption spectrometry (UV-RAS method) is the key for the low ranges and the low cross-sensitivity to other gases.

•Signal conditioning: the Limas 11 uses a dual beam, double quotient method for signal conditioning in order to compensate for almost every kind of drift (internal as well as, for example, contamination).

•Simultaneous measurement of NO and NO2 in a single instrument. Ammonia (NH3) as a third component is also possible. (By simultaneously measuring NO and NO2 it is also possible to get rid of the NOx converter and the cooler necessary for conventional systems design).

•The Limas 11UV is available with gas-filled calibration cells allowing for span adjustments without flowing reference gas. Long term stability has been approved in a 10-year lasting test performed by an approved independent authority (TUV Germany).

All of these features together – multi-component measurements with a single analyzer, sample handling without cooler and converter and calibration without flowing span gas – are important steps to end up with maximum reliability with minimum maintenance and therefore lower cost.

The Limas 11UV is part of the AO2000 series of analyzers. This modular analyzer line can also be configured to measure N2O, SO2, CO, CO2, O2, and THC levels by simply exchanging or adding analyzer modules. A single control unit can be used for fast, simultaneous monitoring of up to six measuring components offering complete control for even the most complex systems. Fully automated validation and calibration, as well as probe blowback, are available if required.

ABB provides Analytical and Advanced Solutions worldwide with laboratory, at-line and on-line process analyzers systems. These integrated systems provide real-time analysis of chemical and physical properties for process monitoring and control applications.
