PredictPro's embedded economic optimizer empowers plant control engineers to solve large, interactive applications

AUSTIN, TEXAS (August 6, 2003) - Emerson Process Management has added new capabilities to its PlantWeb(R) digital plant architecture with the release of enhanced model predictive control (MPC) software. The introduction of DeltaV(TM)PredictPro significantly increases the controller size and functionality beyond that of its DeltaV Predict predecessor, empowering control engineers to improve performance of large, interactive applications without the need of control experts.

Commenting about the potential of performance improvement using MPC was Tom
Fiske, senior analyst at ARC advisory group, who said, "Achieving maximum efficiency of employed capital assets is key for the process industries. It is no longer enough to just maintain adequate control in manufacturing. Producers must operate at the limits of process constraints to remain competitive. Applications like catalytic cracking, distillation trains, crystallization, and fermentation present difficult automation challenges for true global optimum operating conditions. Model predictive control technology is one tool that users are employing to achieve this optimum performance level."

Included in Emerson's new PredictPro MPC software is a new embedded economic optimizer and enhanced data status handling. Users can now apply this control application on larger and tougher process problems including refining FCCU and distillation applications. Unlike other PC-based MPC applications that require both host and controller to operate, DeltaV PredictPro is fully executed in DeltaV controllers, enabling full processor, networking, and power redundancy.

"Our DeltaV Predict product has enabled plant engineers to implement model predictive control without hiring process automation consultants to implement the solution. It is easy to install, easy to use, and takes advantage of field intelligence to overcome difficulties, such as a bad process variable," said Duncan Schleiss, vice president of marketing for the
process systems business of Emerson Process Management. "The ease-of-use philosophy of the DeltaV system has been applied to advanced control so in-plant engineers can tackle large, interactive process problems. Entire process units can now be optimized by in-plant resources with this extension
of our model predictive control echnology."

The PredictPro product includes a new algorithm for process optimization. This capability allows users to drive the process toward economically optimum solutions based on energy and feed costs as well as product values, while simultaneously respecting multiple constraints. Users can now easily optimize their units for maximum throughput, maximum profit or minimum energy. Testing and development of the process model is fully automated, reducing much of the modeling effort needed to implement traditional model predictive control applications.

"DeltaV Predict already allowed users to handle tough process problems. With the new PredictPro, they can manage truly large and highly interactive processes," said Darrin Kuchle, DeltaV advanced control product manager. "We've expanded the number of manipulated variables from our current 8x8 matrix to a 20x20 matrix. With the added size, we've included tools to better manage these larger, more complex applications. DeltaV PredictPro is scheduled to be scaled up even further in a future release to tackle the largest applications."

DeltaV PredictPro can use simulated variables to improve MPC service factor.
Since larger MPC controllers require more advanced techniques for handling invalid parameters, DeltaV PredictPro can be configured to simulate variables using sampled inputs. Simulations can be used to provide the model data between sampled inputs from analyzers or other non-continuous measurement devices. This can allow the controller to continue to operate when input statuses are temporarily bad, uncertain, or not available.

All DeltaV model predictive control software enables users to test simulations with fast execution times, up to 100 times faster than real time, so models can be validated and controllers tested thoroughly before being put on line. Process models are presented in graphical form to allow easy checking for anomalous data. Execution times as fast as once a second are possible for smaller controllers, enabling PredictPro use on processes too fast for other MPC solutions in regulatory applications as well as supervisory ones.
