Emerson Wins Contract for Digital Automation of Power Generation Units in China
PITTSBURGH (February 2006) — Emerson Process Management announced today it has received a contract to install its PlantWeb digital plant architecture with the Ovation® expert control system and Foundation™ fieldbus technology in Units 7 and 8 of the Zouxian Power Plant. The project, Zouxian Phase IV, was awarded by China Huadian Group Corp. It will represent the first installation of Foundation fieldbus device technology for monitoring and controlling processes at a power generation facility in China. Foundation fieldbus, a critical component of Emerson’s PlantWeb digital plant architecture, has been proven in thousands of installations across industries worldwide to help plants achieve substantial cost savings and operational benefits. China Huadian Group’s application of Foundation fieldbus and PlantWeb at Zouxian Units 7 and 8 is representative of the power industry’s growing adoption of these advanced technologies.

The new Zouxian units will be among the first ultra-supercritical units in China to have a 1,000-megawatt output rating. Ultra-supercritical plants use new advanced clean coal technology that allows operation at elevated steam temperatures and pressures. Ultra-supercritical technologies are expected to become more prevalent in China because they typically boost the efficiency of coal-based electricity generation by more than 50 percent, while maintaining superior environmental performance.

When Zouxian Phase IV is completed in 2007, Zouxian Power Plant is expected to be the largest coal-fired plant in China, with eight units having a total generating capacity of 4,540 megawatts. Located in the Shandong Province, the plant is a critical component of China Huadian Group’s efforts to meet the increasing demand for power in the region.

“Because this is one of the first projects in which we are applying ultra-supercritical technology, we needed a proven, state-of-the-art control solution backed by superior technical expertise,” said Hua Zhang, senior I&C engineer, China Huadian Group. “We found both of these in Emerson,” continued Zhang, who notes that Units 5 and 6 of the plant also utilize Emerson controls.

Emerson’s comprehensive control solution includes a total of 64 redundant controllers, 24 Ovation workstations, AMS™ Suite asset management software and more than 130 Foundation fieldbus intelligent devices. This includes Rosemount® 848T transmitters, as well as additional Fisher® and Rosemount intelligent field devices yet to be specified. The Ovation system, which will manage nearly 30,000 I/O points, will provide data acquisition as well as control and monitoring of the boilers and balance of plant processes.

Unit 7 is expected to be operational in August 2007; Unit 8 is slated to come online in December 2007. Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry center will coordinate and supervise the $3 million project.

PlantWeb architecture’s network of predictive intelligence detects problems even before they occur, enabling power generators to avoid unplanned outages and optimize plant performance. Ovation, which was designed specifically to meet the challenges of the power generation industry, boasts a number of industry-leading advanced technologies.
