Emerson’s Ovation® Migration for Bailey Systems Reduces Costs, Risks of Control System Transition

Ovation® migration paths offer flexible, cost-effective alternatives to traditional system replacement

PITTSBURGH (Dec. 9, 2003) — Emerson Process Management announced its new Ovation® Migration for Bailey Systems program at POWER-GEN International 2003. This program offers power generators a flexible and cost-effective alternative to traditional control system replacement.

Emerson’s Power & Water Solutions industry center uses the latest hardware and software to bridge communications between the Ovation expert control system and Bailey Network 90 and INFI 90 systems, according to Ron Oscher, vice president of marketing, Power & Water Solutions industry center of Emerson Process Management. “Now, Bailey users can take advantage of the latest control technology without the initial cost of a full control system,” he explained.

The Ovation Migration for Bailey Systems program, which is available for both Ovation Solaris-based and Ovation Windows-based systems, offers a phased approach that lets Bailey users proceed at a pace that best fits their operational and financial needs. These migration paths are:

· Systems Interconnection
· HMI Console Replacement
· Termination Unit Reuse
· Complete Replacement

Systems Interconnection
Systems Interconnection is exactly that – a method of interconnecting the two systems to allow data exchange to occur. An OPC interface transfers data between the Ovation system and the Bailey system via a Computer Interface Unit (CIU). This method, which requires the least capital investment, allows parallel operation without the need to shutdown operations, and offers Ovation’s full alarming and trending capabilities for the Bailey data. “Systems Interconnection allows the user to build confidence that the data transfer is correct and accurate over time,” said Oscher. Systems Interconnection is also the building block for the next alternative – HMI Console Replacement.

HMI Console Replacement
In this alternative, the Ovation base network and database system replaces the Bailey console. Ovation's newer technology offers a significant benefit to users, enabling them to take advantage of PlantWeb®, Foundationä fieldbus, HART and other digital bus technologies.
HMI Console Replacement, which includes a standard Ovation graphic user interface, operator workstation and OPC server, builds on Systems Interconnection and is designed to fully integrate operation of Bailey Command Series, INFI 90 and Network 90 systems with the Ovation expert control system. This option, which also allows parallel operation with no shutdown, offers full-featured inter-operation between the Ovation operator/engineer workstations and the Bailey controllers, as well as aligning with other plant IT infrastructures for flexible control monitoring functions. “This option is completely customizable to match plant architecture and needs, offering users a flexible solution for aging Bailey technology,” said Oscher.

Termination Re-use
Termination Re-use provides a way for customers to re-use Bailey termination units, which connect the field signals to the DCS. In this alternative, customers can preserve their investment in terminations, field wiring and field documentation, while replacing the PCUs, I/O masters and I/O slave modules with Ovation controllers and I/O. This pre-engineered marshalling solution not only saves the user money, but also reduces downtime and speeds startup, according to Oscher. “Ovation’s easy configuration allows the engineering conversion to be completed quickly, and simulation assures our customers that the plant will operate to satisfaction prior to startup,” he said.

Complete Replacement
Complete Replacement is the appropriate option when the customer needs to retrofit and rehabilitate the control system, field instrumentation and major mechanical systems, and process downtime is less critical. This option replaces all the cabinets and requires the field signals to be re-terminated, which means a complete system upgrade is done, including field documentation. When completed, the newly migrated Ovation system has no remaining legacy controls, database or graphics. “This option provides users with a clean break with the past, giving them the opportunity to re-establish a new ground zero for documentation, control graphics, wiring and other aspects of the control environment,” Oscher said.

By providing a customized, detailed migration plan, Emerson's Ovation Migration for Bailey Systems reduces the costs and risks of control system transition while also minimizing total project time and inconvenience to users, according to Oscher. "By leveraging training, application development skills, and operations expertise, the Ovation Migration for Bailey program provides a single solution for moving our customers’ generating plants into the future."
