GE Fanuc Increases Packaging Machine Cycle Rates and OEE with New Automation Solutions
Enhanced “Six Degrees” Solutions Boost Dependability, Flexibility, Efficiency

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – November 8, 2004 – GE Fanuc Automation Americas, Inc., a unit of GE Infrastructure, has launched new, integrated automation solutions for packaging machinery that can increase cycle rates and Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) – at PACK EXPO International 2004, November 7-11, Chicago. GE Fanuc’s new automation solutions for packaging machinery combine controllers, scaleable operator interfaces, plant information software and motion control to achieve:

  • Powerful remote monitoring and diagnostics capabilities that can enhance dependability,
  • Quicker component changeover for greater flexibility,
  • High-speed data collection and tracking for easy operational validation,
  • High-yield capabilities for efficiency, and
  • Open architecture for compatibility and reduced equipment costs.

“Packagers need highly efficient equipment that’s capable of fast change-over between differently sized batches or product runs without breaking stride,” said Maria Piazza, director of packaging solutions, for GE Fanuc Automation. “What are users looking for in packaging machines? They need automated systems that enhance dependability, flexibility, operational validation, efficiency, compatibility, and support – what GE Fanuc calls the ‘Six Degrees of Differentiation.’”

Part of GE Fanuc’s “Six Degrees” family, these new integrated solutions offer enhanced capabilities to further drive competitive advantage.

Remote monitoring and diagnostic tools for dependability: Online monitoring makes it possible to perform preventive maintenance without system shutdown and to troubleshoot issues remotely, eliminating costly trips to users’ sites. The built-in diagnostics in GE Fanuc software and I/O facilitate troubleshooting, decrease downtime, and reduce total maintenance costs.

Quicker component changeover for flexibility: GE Fanuc solutions are designed to reduce the time it takes to make changeovers, ensuring packaging machinery users make the most of their investment. They can program recipes faster, thanks to library functionality and symbolic programming. They can load programs on the fly and swap I/O without system shutdown. And they make changes across a variety of machines, using integrated development software and a common database. With these and other features, changeover time between production runs can be reduced from several hours to just minutes.

Data collection and tracking for easy operational validation of the machine as well as expansive controller memory for data or documentation storage: GE Fanuc access control, version control, and audit history with built-in system manager make tracking easy to implement. Controls have redundancy options to ensure equipment is running as designed, as well as allocated CPU memory to store validation documentation from factory acceptance testing. For regulatory industries, a fully 21 CFR 11 compliant system with electronic signature is available.

High-yield capabilities for efficiency: The full range of GE Fanuc high-performance controllers with integrated or stand-alone motion control allows precise and accurate flexibility for creating the optimal high machine speed with high yield. The single programming environment logic, motion, and operator interface also increases productivity. Depending on the complexity of the system, production rates can be improved by as much as 100%.

Open architecture for compatibility: A full range of communication and language options simplifies integration with coexisting systems and policies, reducing total equipment cost dramatically and increasing return on investment.

Available now, GE Fanuc’s new automation solutions – and the full line of Six Degrees of Differentiation for Packaging Machinery Manufacturers – are ideal for wrapping machines; case/tray handling machines; pallet forming, dismantling, and securing equipment; closing machines; labeling, decorating, and marking machines; cleaning, sterilizing, cooling, and drying machines; container and component handling machines; form, fill, and seal machines; cartoning machines; container/material manufacture; inspection/testing; and converting equipment.
