Honeywell Wins Contract For IT System Project At Finnish Pulp Mill

September 132004
Web-based Technology Will Expedite and Simplify Critical Operations

PHOENIX, Sept. 13, 2004 - Honeywell (NYSE:HON) has received a contract for an IT System project at a pulp mill, Sunila, in Kotka, Finland. Honeywell will supply and install a manufacturing execution system (MES) and a Web-based data reporting solution that will help the plant to improve overall business performance. The systems are scheduled for startup in the summer of 2005.

"Honeywell technology will enable us to operate more efficiently by managing crucial aspects of our business, from orders to dispatch," said Juhani Kautto, Managing Director of the Sunila Pulp Mill. "The flexible analysis capabilities of the data reporting solution will also help us improve operations, and will prove particularly useful in managing our export business."

Honeywell OptiVisionR is ideally suited for pulp and paper manufacturers because it addresses a full spectrum of industry specific requirements, including order management, advanced planning and scheduling, production management, quality management, inventory management and ERP integration.

Sunila will benefit from supervisory capabilities, such as improved production efficiencies; fewer; reduced inventory; electronic invoicing and other business transactions and fewer shipping mistakes. OptiVision is fully compatible with ERP software to maximize the return on investment in business information systems.

The Web-based data reporting solution collects specified performance data from OptiVision and other database tables. It can store that information for many years, and through a Web interface, allow users to analyze data in a multidimensional cube-revealing information not seen through conventional analysis methods. Users can customize analyses using an Internet browser and various "drill-down" techniques. Operators can save information either as a Web page or a PDF document to view later or share with the enterprise. The application enables management to monitor operations and key assets, identify bottlenecks, track production performance and improve customer service.

"These technology solutions will enable Sunila to operate with more agility and efficiency than ever before," said Jack Bolick, President of Honeywell Process Solutions. "Honeywell is pleased to help Sunila adopt e-business strategies that positively affect the company's entire operation."

The Sunila Pulp Mill produces 350,000 tonnes of bleached softwood pulp per year. It specializes in reinforcement pulp for wood-containing printing papers such as lightweight coated (LWC) paper, thin, high-gloss SC paper and newsprint.
