infoteam Introduces DTM(Device Type Managers) Class Library - Intelligent Software Components for Fieldbus Devices

December 132004
Nuremberg, 13. December 2004 - The ongoing discussion on the pros and cons of FDT/DTM technology is fuelled, above all, by the high software costs for the creation and maintenance of Device Type Managers. The DTM Class Library, which was introduced by infoteam Software for the first time at SPS/IPC/Drives in Nuremberg, should help to resolve this situation.

Over the last few months, the FDT Joint Interest Group focused intensively on standardising the creation of DTMs so that devices could then be operated in a uniform manner. This standardisation very quickly led to infoteam, an independent software house, and Endress+Hauser Process Solutions jointly launching a sample implementation in the form of a class library. This will take the wind out of the argument that preference should be given to the traditional EDD technology, above all, for simpler devices and that DTM is only really worthwhile for more complex devices.

As explained by Dr. Wolfgang Brendel, the Managing Director of infoteam Software, “…nobody will retrofit existing installations now that this innovative DTM class library is available. When inviting for tenders for new systems and fundamental modernisation, the costs for generating the corresponding DTMs will be more than compensated by the savings in the assembly and commissioning phases.” DTMs are intelligent software components which, thanks to the offline parameterisation of the devices on the fieldbus, already support the engineers in the configuration phase. In this way, the cost-intensive commissioning period can be greatly reduced due to the prior planning phase in the office.

The introduction of the innovative library can be seen as an answer to the users' repeated demand for uniform operating procedures. The stipulations of the working group in the FDT consortium have been fully implemented and this guarantees that all the derived DTMs fully comply with the latest regulations. This is of great significance in the light of the planned certification of DTMs as this quality seal will largely determine the success or failure of a new product. This obviously had a great impact on the decision of the ETHERNET Powerlink Group to use FDT/DTM technology as a basis for its network configuration and device parameterisation. It is therefore not surprising that the announced Powerlink configurator PowerMAP will also be developed by infoteam Software.

infoteam Software GmbH
infoteam Software was founded in 1983 and now has over 50 employees who are committed to the development of software for industrial automation and medical technology. The central focus lies on interactive programming environments for industrial controllers, robotics, building and laboratory automation as well as on firmware for control, sensor and actuator engineering and communication in the area of Embedded Control. infoteam Software is the world market leader for IEC 61131-3-compatible programming environments, the global programming standard for industrial controllers.

infoteam's activities in the medical technology area focus on the development of software tools for laboratory automation as well as on automated tests and the company's professional, high-quality work guarantees the highest possible level of security in this safety-critical industry. Patient and laboratory databases and interactive graphical visualisation systems play a major role here as does the configuration of trial and analyses sequences. Relevant experience in the implementation of international standards such as IEC 61508 and statutory regulations such as FDA CFR 21 Part 11 and IVD has been gathered in projects for safety-oriented systems and devices for radiological tests.

Our customer base includes leading manufacturers in Europe, the USA and the Far East who operate in the areas of automation, medical technology, building management as well as energy generation and distribution.

infoteam Software is certified in compliance with ISO 9001:2000
