infoteam Software Introduces SmartPLC, SmartMotion and SmartHMI with Open Source Software

December 2004 - infoteam Software came up with a novel idea for the introduction of its product series Smart* at the SPS/IPC/Drives exhibition: the smart was used to promote SmartPLC, SmartMotion and SmartHMI. Each of the visitors to the infoteam exhibition was entered into a draw for a weekend away in the world culture city of Bamberg with the smart fortwo.

The surprise was a success! While the other suppliers of software for IEC 61131-3 programming concentrated on introducing their future engineering platforms, infoteam further strengthened its leading position with the introduction of the Smart* product series. Dr. Wolfgang Brendel, the Managing Director of infoteam Software: “We already introduced the concept of an open engineering platform last year with the launching of OpenPCS 5.0 and the provision of support for external tools on the basis of the 'Active Document Server'. We are now taking one giant step forward with the Smart* product series and offer 'Open Source Software' for producers of embedded systems who wish to implement a SoftSPS, motion control and visualisation in a manner that conforms with IEC 61131-3.”

At present, SmartPLC is the only SoftPLC with real compilers for machine code that take account of the required speed and performance in PLC applications. SmartPLC meets these requirements in an additional compiling step. The extremely compact programme code offers maximum performance in a wide range of controller types even when memory space is limited. Using the accompanying OpenPCS Automation Suite, easily comprehensible graphical configuration can be carried out in the accustomed PC environment in accordance with IEC 61131-3.

SmartMotion is a motion control library in accordance with the specifications of PLCopen, but extends on the CAN in Automation profile DIS 402. Hence, a hardware-independent, distributed drive solution can easily be implemented via graphical configuration in CFC.

SmartHMI combines drawings, operational sequences, quality reports and process management directly in the operator display. Curve tracking, logging of historical data, reports and analyses. The numerous graphic display possibilities greatly enhance the informative value of the data! Configuration embraces efficient sorting, filtering, viewing and logging functions. The integration with OpenPCS Automation Suite paves the way for common variables in accordance with IEC 61131-3.

But what does all this have to do with smartfortwo? The software from info-team is also used in car assembly! The connection to Daimler Chrysler was intensified in the last few months through the joint research project MO-DALE, a project in which KUKA Roboter also participates. Dr. Wolfgang Brendel: “MODALE focuses on the complete modelling of a production process extending from the planning of the machines and systems and automatic code generation for the SoftSPS to the simulation of the virtual factory. I would not like to go into any further detail at the moment. After all, we would also like to surprise our customers with another forward-looking solution next year!”
