ISA Produces Guide to Industrial Process Symbols

April 052004
Research Triangle Park, NC (5 April 2004) – As with most technical subjects, industrial process control has a language all its own. Now ISA offers an easy book of translation: Instrumentation and Control Systems Documentation by Frederick A. Meier and Clifford A. Meier (ISBN: 1-55617-870-0).

The documents that describe modern industrial processes assume some level of understanding on the reader’s part. This book explains and applies the symbols and documents used to define a modern industrial instrumentation and control system. The authors show how this symbol-based “language,” which may resemble Mayan hieroglyphics to those unfamiliar with the nomenclature, provides a wealth of information once translated.

The book offers a helpful reference to process control newcomers. For more experienced professionals, it offers insights into using the symbols and documents more effectively, as well as variations in the use of symbols and pitfalls to avoid.

Documents discussed in ISA’s book include process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation drawings, instrument lists, specification forms, logic diagrams, installation details, location plans, and loop diagrams.

Beginning 28 April, Instrumentation and Control Systems Documentation will be available for purchase on the ISANetwork, www.isa.org/books, by calling (919) 549-8411.

Review copy available upon request.
