ISA Releases Job Analysis Study For New Automation Professional Certification

August 182004
ISA - The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society has published the Job Analysis Study for its Certified Automation Professional (CAP) program. The 77-page report, available at www.isa.org/capanalysis, is free for ISA members and costs non-members $150.

The release of the job analysis study represents a significant milestone for the new certification program, and confirms the steps taken to ensure that the exam is "content-valid." According to Jim Henderson, VP of Castle Worldwide, the psychometric firm hired to perform the study, "The job analysis study is a delineation of the tasks that are involved in performing a job. Generally the tasks can be grouped together in very general areas of responsibility that are called domains." Henderson goes on to explain that there are knowledge and skill lists associated with each job task. To competently perform his or her job, an Automation Professional is expected to know and be able to do the tasks delineated in the job analysis study.

The job analysis study is the blueprint for the CAP exam and guarantees that exam takers will be tested on the basic knowledge and competencies that automation professionals need to perform their jobs effectively. In addition to identifying the knowledge and job tasks performed by the automation professional, the report also evaluates the importance, criticality, and frequency of these tasks.

ISA is accepting applications for the first offering of the CAP exam scheduled for October 7th at ISA EXPO 2004 in Houston, Texas. Additional exams will be given October 9th and December 11th at select locations. The application deadline for the October 7 and 9 exam dates is September 1. October 29 is the application deadline for the December 11 exam offerings.

For more information about the CAP program, including eligibility requirements, exam locations, key knowledge and skills, a detailed program handbook, and a study guide available for purchase, please visit www.isa.org/cap.
