March 2015 Marks Record-Breaking Month for Wind Energy Generation in Scotland with 16% Uptick Year-on-Year

Scotland has reported a sharp uptick in its wind energy output compared on a year-on-year basis. As compared to the first quarter of 2014 the country’s wind energy output increased by 16% during the same period in 2015. However, environmental organization WWF Scotland has said that the country urgently needs to look into the wind energy storage infrastructure if it is to efficiently utilize it.
A recent study by WWF saw that Scotland’s wind energy output in March 2015 had seen a substantial increase compared to the same month last year. The current level of wind energy generated is sufficient to power nearly every home in the country, the charitable organization said.
In its study, the group noted that the volume of wind energy generated in March 2015 in Scotland was remarkably higher over the same month last year. Virtually every home in Scotland could be powered with the volume of energy generated in the month, the team that conducted the study observed. Despite the increase, the group said that energy efficiency and storage needs to be improved, which would mean that Scotland will have to allocate a higher budget toward energy storage infrastructure.
According to the director of WWF Scotland, Lang Banks, the country experienced strong winds in March 2015, which augured well for the wind energy sector. He added, however, that despite Scotland generating massive volumes of renewable energy, it is imperative for the polity to ensure that the inflow of investment to build supplementary infrastructure (such as pump hydro energy storage) doesn’t decelerate.
Banks opined that a sound energy bank would help the country cope with periods when it doesn’t receive strong winds. In another segment of the study, researchers noted that in Edinburgh, homes with solar panels were exceptionally high on efficiency. The findings of the study reveal that these solar panels contributed to about 75% of the total electricity needs of these households.
