MOST Announces Plans for Safety Controller Certified to SIL 2

February 042005
Hampton, NH.. MOST (MTL Open System Technologies) announced that the MOST Safety Controller would soon be available to meet SIL2 safety requirements.

"There are MOST customers who want both a process control and safety related solution based on the same Control platform,” according to MOST president Dennis Gillespie. "We developed the MOST Safety Controller to meet this need, by allowing them to develop process control and SIL 2 rated safety shutdown systems with the same hardware family, using the same development environment – providing them with considerable savings in development time, maintenance, spares and training.”

Wherever there is a potential threat to life or the environment, protective systems have long been implemented for process industries. Until recently, however, each company basically had its own safety shut down procedures – often incorporating expensive hardwired or TMR – triple modular redundancy – systems. With IEC61508 standards were introduced that define four SIL (Safety Integrity Level) levels. SIL 4 sets the most demanding requirements with SIL 1-3 defining lower levels of risk reduction that can be matched with lower risk operations. The standard allows process industries to choose the appropriate SIL level solution to match an application, so the user can match equipment to each safety instrumented function.

"The MOST Safety Controller is based on the same platform as other MOST logic control solutions, and will consist of SIL 2 rated controllers, I/O modules and a logic workbench.,” according to Gillespie. “The extensive offering enables users to address their process control, Emergency Shut-Down (ESD) and Fire & Gas (F&G) safety needs with one product family. “

The benefits will include:
  • the ability to quantify the nature of risks and design a protective system appropriate to them
  • a potential protective system can be shown to be suitable to clearly demonstrated standards
  • under- or over-specifying a protective system can be avoided
  • a less expensive solution can be shown to reduce overall risk to As Low As Reasonable Practical (ALARP) levels
  • Dual redundant controllers also provide improved availability

“Our SIL 2 solution is perfect for low demand applications, which are typically found in process applications, including petrochemical plants, chemical plants, power generation, gas processing plants, oil & gas, and pipelines,” Gillespie noted.

The MOST Control system is a rugged, field-mountable control platform intended for those process applications that might previously have used programmable logic controllers (PLCs) because of their ability to scale to fit smaller applications. The MOST control system provides process customers with an effective alternative to PLC solutions. When combined with MTL8000 Process I/O components, it offers cost-savings over control-room mounted systems as well as flexible system design and high system availability. A MOST system can use off-the-shelf HMI packages, including Wonderware, Intellution and Cimplicity.

The MOST control system is an ideal solution for harsh and hazardous applications. It operates over the –40°C to +70°C typical of industrial, harsh process applications. The powerful controller provides a tight control loop response, assuring that the system has more than enough capacity for advanced control strategies. The controller features a rigorous redundancy model and has redundant Ethernet communications ports for reliable system operations and high-speed communications.

MTL Incorporated is the leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic devices for the protection of instrumentation located in hazardous areas, as well as rugged measurement and control instrumentation for harsh and hazardous process applications and a complete surge protection offering for all plant systems including instrumentation, AC power and communications networks.
