MTS Offers New Liquid-level Sensor for Underground Storage Tanks
CARY, N.C. (March 3, 2005) — MTS Sensors Division has launched the Model USTD II liquid-level sensor for leak detection and inventory monitoring of underground storage tanks. Expanding the company’s extensive line of magnetostrictive sensors, the robust Model USTD II is the pioneering Underground Storage Tank (UST) gauge for fuel and solvent applications, such as gas station fuel storage.

Unlike radar sensing technology, which only senses level in a vessel, the USTD II, as well as MTS Sensors’ MG Digital sensor, can sense inventory level, interface level and temperature measurement – all accomplished with only one opening in the top of the vessel. This allows for convenient upgrades to existing tanks using older mechanical, capacitance or radar technologies. Other sensor technologies require two or sometimes three openings to measure interface level and temperature.

The USTD II utilizes MTS Sensors’ Temposonics® magnetostrictive technology to provide continuous absolute level gauging, offering temperature, product and water level output information from a single probe. Dual floats are used to measure product level and water. In addition, the gauge determines the average temperature and individual multi-point temperatures with five integrated temperature transmitters accurate to 0.5 degrees F (0.25 degrees C). An RS-485 interface is used for remote data transfer to the tank management system.

“While our other level sensors offer outstanding solutions for numerous liquid level measurement applications, certain functions require unique features,” said Adrian Totten, Product Marketing Manager at MTS Sensors. “The USTD II combines many features of our other level products in creating an ideal solution that has been specifically designed for underground storage tank monitoring. In addition to monitoring new tanks, the USTD II offers simple upgrades for existing tanks that may need upgraded level-sensing applications.”

The USTD II is available for both flange and fill tube mounting. As well as being intrinsically safe, it has safety approvals for Zones 0 and 1 – ATEX EEx ia IIB T4 and FM IS Class I, Division 1. It is available in lengths of 29 in. to 149 in. (740 mm to 3800 mm) and will operate in process temperatures from -40 to 160 degrees F (-40 to 71 degrees C). Free set-up and monitoring software is available with purchase.
