Phoenix Contact announces Nanoline Contest 2014

September 16, 2013 - Phoenix Contact once again challenges middle and high school students to put their engineering skills to the test in the Nanoline Contest 2014. Grand prize for the winning team’s efforts is a trip to Germany.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Phoenix Contact has sponsored the competition, which challenges students to design and build a working control system using the company’s easy-to-program Nanoline controller. The winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Hanover Fair in Germany next spring. They will present their project in TectoYou, a special hall at the Hanover Fair dedicated to promoting science and technology careers to young people.

Interested teachers, parents and students can get more information and register at www.phoenixcontact.com/nanolinecontest. The deadline for registration is October 4.

Regional contests will be held on or around February 1, 2014 (subject to the locations of schools that enter). The top three teams from each regional competition will advance to the final judging at Phoenix Contact USA’s headquarters on February 15. The winner will be announced as part of Phoenix Contact’s National Engineers Week celebration. The contest is one of several science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiatives in which the company participates to encourage young people to consider engineering careers.

“Since we started this contest six years ago, it has grown significantly – not just in terms of the number of teams participating but, more importantly, in the complexity of projects,” said Jack Nehlig, president of Phoenix Contact USA. “We’re looking forward to seeing the creative engineering and teamwork from the 2014 teams.”

Nanoline is an intelligent and compact controller that automates basic tasks. It is programmed with the intuitive nanoNavigator software, so no previous programming experience is necessary. Phoenix Contact supplies the participating teams with the Nanoline controller, nanoNavigator software and technical support. This year, rather than providing team mentors, Phoenix Contact will provide the teams with tutorials via YouTube.
