Rockwell Automation Shows How Investments in an Integrated Safety Control Solution Can Boost Plant-Floor Productivity

November 152005
MILWAUKEE, Nov. 16, 2005 — While safety requirements will vary by industry, the integration of safety and standard control is a universal goal and is more possible today because of industry standards and technology developments.

Managing factory floor risks is most effectively accomplished with a combination of knowledge, experience and the right technology. Rockwell Automation shows its own recipe for integration success this week on the show floor of Automation Fair in St. Louis, Mo., with new products, services and solutions that help companies establish a safer workplace for employees and machinery, reduce costs associated with maintenance and repair, and improve bottom-line productivity through streamlined operations.

“Companies today want to put their trust in solution providers committed to safety automation,” said Lyle Masimore, safety business manager, Rockwell Automation. “During the past few years, we have developed new safety products, participated in standards organizations, and invested heavily in resources that will help our customers integrate their standard and safety applications.” Some recent additions to the Rockwell Automation safety portfolio include:

Allen-Bradley GuardLogix – This new controller supports integrated safety and standard control systems with a two-processor safety architecture and standard programming with online editing and integrated safety functions. For users, programming a safety or standard function on GuardLogix is the same experience. GuardLogix is rated up to a Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 functionality.

Allen-Bradley DeviceNet Safety Scanner – Connecting directly to GuardPLC 1600 or GuardPLC 1800 controllers, the DeviceNet Safety Scanner allows the GuardPLC to send and receive information from a broad spectrum of standard and safety devices over a single DeviceNet network. Configure with Rockwell Software RSNetWorx for DeviceNet and connect up to 63 devices per scanner, 32 of which can be safety nodes. The DeviceNet Safety Scanner is TÜV certified for up to SIL 3 Category 4 applications.

Allen-Bradley Multizone SafeZone Safety Laser Scanner – This new safety scanner from Rockwell Automation detects objects or persons in its sensing field by emitting pulses of eye-safe infrared laser light over a 190-degree arc. This scanner is certified for both vertical and horizontal guarding applications and offers configurable safety fields with a radius of five meters, and warning fields with a radius of up to 49 meters. This allows users to solve point of operation, area guarding and access detection applications with a single flexible safety control.

Allen-Bradley MSR300 Safety Relay Family – The latest in safety relay architecture uses plug-and-play digital I/O expansion modules, offers a logic configuration ability with multiple inputs (such as two-hand control, e-stop/gate control and light curtains), and the ability to control multiple independent outputs. The MSR300 can control up to three group outputs and perform simple function block logic configurations through rotary switch settings. This enhanced logic capability, plus provision for up to 20 input circuits on one base unit, allows safety control of larger, more complex manufacturing equipment with a single relay system.

Allen-Bradley Kinetix 6000 and Kinetix 7000 with GuardMotion– These servo drives feature a new safe torque off capability that helps maximize machine availability. The feature safely disables the drive output, allowing machine setup, cleaning, removal of jams and other maintenance tasks to be accomplished without removing power from the entire machine. The Kinetix safe torque off solution is certified by TÜV and meets the requirements of EN-954-1 Category 3 and IEC-61508 SIL 3.

Manufacturers can select from the broadest offering of safety components available through Rockwell Automation and tap into Rockwell Automation services to design a solution that helps companies make the best use of their resources to enhance their safety programs.
