Siemens Energy & Automation Announces the New SITRANS PD 500 Level Switch With Product Quality Control and Interface Detection
Typical level switch applications include oil and water separators, dry-run alarm for pump protection, water knock-out drums, interface or product presence detection, product quality or contamination control, and empty pipe detection.

SPRING HOUSE, Pa. December 2003 – Siemens Energy & Automation announces the new SITRANS PD 500 level switch, a high performance two-wire capacitance instrument used in liquid pipe systems for product quality control and interface detection.

The SITRANS PD500 unit has been designed for use in extreme temperatures and pressures, and with aggressive, toxic chemicals, such as those found in the chemical, petrochemical, or power generation industries. Typical applications include oil and water separators, dry-run alarm for pump protection, water knockout drums, interface or product presence detection, product quality or contamination control, and empty-pipe detection. The unit has Lloyd’s Register approval for use on FPSO ships and offshore applications.

The flow-through electrode provides reliable, high-accuracy measurement with no sensor obstruction in the pipeline. It is suitable for use on any ferrous or non-ferrous piping system. Its enhanced electronics offer HART communications for remote configuration and inspection. It also features a one-point calibration and integrated local display for easy, on-site installation and set-up. The one-point calibration feature makes set-up simple, without shutting down the production process. Full-function diagnostics comply with NAMUR NE 43 for both local and remote diagnostics, showing all the relevant variables at the same instant.

The SITRANS PD500 provides superior accuracy and long-term stability, and the inverse-frequency approach to capacitance technology produces high resolution. The 420 kHz

electronic unit provides accurate, repeatable readings even in cases of extreme product build-up, while the PTFE lined electrode offers excellent resistance to build-up.

The instrument is effective in temperatures from -328°F to 392°F (-200°C to 200°C) and pressures from full vacuum to 725 psi (50 bar).
