Thorsten Arnhold of R. Stahl appointed IECEx chairman

December 3, 2013 - On January 1, 2014, Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold, Vice President Technology at R. Stahl, will take over the honorary position of IECEx system chairman for a period of three years. Following his election by the Management Committee in September 2013, his appointment was confirmed at the IECEx General Assembly held in October in New Delhi. Currently comprising 31 member states, the IECEx system is an organisation established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on the assessment of products and services for hazardous areas for conformity with current international safety standards. More than 40 international certifying bodies and testing laboratories accredited by the IECEx system have issued over 31,000 certificates and test reports in the past ten years.

The future chairman has already been heading the German IECEx mirror group since 2007 and the German delegations in Management Committee meetings. He has been professionally involved in the field of explosion protection for more than two decades, and has been a member of international standardisation organisations for 18 years. In his campaign speech, Arnhold announced his commitment to a better standardisation of the still-fragmented field of certification. He aims at reducing the high costs and time spent on multiple certifications for identical features that are in the end unnecessary: “Our goal for the future is one certificate for safe products that enables free global trafficking of explosion-protected goods, much like a passport.” In his term of office, he will also focus particularly on developing certification schemes for service providers and experts, and on the continuous regional expansion of the IECEx system.
