TUVRheinland acquires Non-Destructive Testing Services

December 10, 2008 — TÜVRheinland acquired Non-Destructive Testing Services (NDT), a full-service material inspection company based in Grand Rapids, Mich.

“With the addition of Non-Destructive Testing Services, we can extend our capabilities to address the growing demand for material testing services among our customers. This is also part of TUV Rheinland’s strategy to deepen its Industrial Services business globally with a greater presence in North America, and is our second such acquisition this year,” said Stephan Schmitt, President and CEO of TUV Rheinland North America Holding, Inc.

NDT enjoys extensive experience, excellent employee qualifications, and highly credentialed testing laboratories. The company utilizes a variety of exclusive commercial testing equipment to maximize the types and sizes of materials that can be tested. For example, its destructive testing equipment is capable of exerting 1.2 million lbs. of pressure to pull apart or crush materials up to 4” in diameter while testing breaking points or thresholds used to anchor or support a wide variety of objects.

NDT’s services include a full range of cutting-edge non-destructive testing methods, quality control and assurance functions, and physical testing for the aircraft, automotive, railroad, bridge/building, casting and forging, chemical, civil, Department of Transportation, electronics, light/heavy manufacturing, medical and prosthetics, petrochemical, and utility industries.

“Non-Destructive Testing Services is very excited to join the TUV Rheinland family of companies,” said Robert C. Bills, CEO of Non-Destructive Testing Services. “We see many opportunities to not only grow nationally but globally. Ultimately, our merger with TUV Rheinland will combine our numerous strengths to approach new markets and contracts that were previously out of reach. These strengths along with our core quality values will greatly benefit our current valued customers. I am especially excited for our employees, as this will give them further opportunities to enhance their careers.”

At its disposal, NDT has three state-of-the-art laboratories for high-production non-destructive and mechanical testing services using the latest and most sophisticated testing equipment. The company has three laboratory and field testing facilities in Flint, Mich., Caledonia, Mich., and Aliquippa, Penn. (near Pittsburgh). The laboratories are accredited as Test Facilities by the American Association of Laboratory Accreditation in all disciplines as well as by The American Welding Society (AWS). Additionally, the facilities are accredited by the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program for mechanical testing.

Founded in 1991, the privately-based NDT has 130 employees across the United States. The company is a leading provider of aerial equipment and crane inspection, computed radiography, mechanical integrity testing and inspection, non-destructive laboratory testing, pre-cast and pre-stressed concrete testing, structural steel and building inspection and testing, and welder qualification/procedure and consulting.
