Wonderware and Georgia-Pacific Receive Start Magazine Awards for ArchestrA Technology

September 222004
LAKE FOREST, Calif., Sept. 22, 2004 -- Wonderware, a business unit of Invensys Systems, Inc., today announced that it has received a technology "Enabler Award" from Start magazine.

The award was made in conjunction with Georgia-Pacific Corp.'s application of Wonderware technology, including the Industrial Application Server, which is built on the industry-leading ArchestrA industrial automation and information software architecture. Georgia-Pacific won the magazine's "2004 Technology & Business Award" for its innovative use of information technology.

Georgia-Pacific was acknowledged for using ArchestrA technology to update its Monticello, Ga. manufacturing facility, which was experiencing operational problems as result of an outdated hardware and software infrastructure.

"When the manufacturing line went down, the company incurred a loss in production and associated revenue," said Brent Mazur, process control engineer at Georgia-Pacific. "Georgia-Pacific needed a new system that was reliable, user-friendly and provided an architecture which would lower the long-term operating costs of the IT infrastructure. The technology also had to be easily transferable to other Georgia-Pacific plants. We chose to implement the Wonderware Industrial Application Server based on the ArchestrA software architecture because it takes a simple component object-based approach to application development. Georgia-Pacific can now create objects, reuse the engineering and configuration of the objects, and share them across plants."

"The Technology & Business awards recognize companies that use the latest technology to solve critical business challenges," said John Buell, editor-in-chief at Start magazine. "Georgia-Pacific was selected for its innovative use of Wonderware technologies which resulted in significant improvements in Georgia-Pacific's manufacturing process."

The Technology & Business Awards are judged by an independent panel of industry experts and financial analysts and recognize end-user customer companies that solve significant business problems by implementing creative, cost-effective technology solutions. The Start technology "Enabler Award" is presented to vendor companies for the innovative use of their products by manufacturing companies and is awarded in conjunction with the Technology & Business Award.

"This is a significant achievement for Wonderware," said Mike Bradley, Sr., president of Invensys' Wonderware and ArchestrA business units. "With this award, Start recognizes Wonderware's continued commitment to provide the most innovative applications to the manufacturing industry. From the groundbreaking ArchestrA software architecture to individual product offerings, Wonderware customers achieve business goals without abandoning prior investments in automation systems, production processes or intellectual property."

Wonderware was recognized for Georgia-Pacific's use of several Wonderware products including the Industrial Application Server and IndustrialSQL Server real-time plant historian. The Wonderware Industrial Application Server was implemented to leverage investments in Georgia-Pacific's Monticello plant with object technology at its other manufacturing facilities. It enhanced control engineering and lowered administration costs while making it simpler to roll out updates to other facilities.

In addition to its innovative use of Industrial Application Server, Georgia-Pacific was selected for its application of the IndustrialSQL Server historian to acquire real-time plant operations data. The data provided by Wonderware's IndustrialSQL Server historian enables access to valuable plant intelligence information to assist in the production of Georgia-Pacific's high-quality, medium-density fiberboard product as well as maintenance of the entire manufacturing process.

InSource Solutions, a Wonderware value-added reseller based in Richmond, Va., assisted in the implementation of the solution at Georgia-Pacific.

"The comprehensive Wonderware applications that InSource has implemented provide a unified environment for visualization, plant history, device communications and automation application integration," said Thomas J. Barczak, InSource Solutions vice president. "By using the ArchestrA architecture's component object-based technology and InSource Solutions deployment assistance, Georgia-Pacific was able to rapidly implement their application with lower risk and can cost-effectively be self-sufficient to maintain the system interfaces and database over time."
