Siemens Energy to supply 33 wind turbines in North Dakota

May 5, 2009 - Siemens Energy announces its first U.S. order for 33 units of the new SWT-2.3-101 wind turbine. The Bison I wind project will be located near Center, North Dakota, and will be built in two phases. The first 16 turbines are planned for installation in 2010, and the remaining 17 units of phase two in 2011. When completed, the wind farm is expected to have a generating capacity of up to 75 megawatts (MW). The scope includes the supply, installation and commissioning of the 33 units, as well as a two-year service agreement. The purchaser is Minnesota Power, an electric utility that is committed to diversifying its energy mix and growing its renewables portfolio. Once completed, the wind farm is expected to provide clean power for more than 22,500 homes in Minnesota.

The new SWT-2.3-101 wind turbine is the perfect fit for the Bison I wind farm. Being able to generate more power with the same wind resources can create new opportunities for energy suppliers and allow greater flexibility when choosing locations for their wind projects. The SWT-2.3-101 turbine can therefore be a major strategic asset for energy providers looking to optimize the output from their wind farms. With a diameter of 101 meters, the rotor of the new SWT-2.3-101 has a swept area of 8,000 square meters, which equals one-and-a-half football fields.

The Siemens 2.3-MW wind turbine product family, which is used in the U.S. market, is already well-proven and has set industry standards for availability and reliability. First commissioned in 2002, it has already logged an impressive 30 million operating hours worldwide. Based on the design of Siemens’ widely deployed 2.3-MW family, buyers can have an extra level of confidence in their investment in this new turbine. The rugged structural design, combined with an automated lubrication system, internal climate control and a simplified generator system without slip rings, contributes to providing exceptional reliability. The SWT-2.3-101 is designed for long service intervals, which can help further reduce servicing and maintenance costs.

Wind power is an important feature of Siemens environmental portfolio. In 2008, revenue from the products and solutions of Siemens environmental portfolio was nearly EUR 19 billion, which is equivalent to around a quarter of Siemens total revenue.
