ABB is New Licensee for Paprican's Mid and Near Infrared (FTIR and FTNIR) Technology

Quebec City, Canada, August 4, 2003 ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will be the new licensee for Paprican's mid and near infrared advanced analytical technology.ABB was assigned the license by Paprican after it acquired the existing Advanced Process Control business of Aker-Kvaerner Canada Inc. The patented technology from Paprican employs spectroscopic techniques and mill-proven equipment to analyze important chemical concentrations in liquid streams found throughout kraft pulp mills. The technology has already been implemented successfully in nine commercial installations in North America. ABB will initially focus on the North American and European markets; however will begin to roll out the technology to the rest of the world within one year.Paprican (The Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada) is a not-for-profit research and educational organization, founded in 1925.It operates research laboratories in Pointe-Claire, QC, and Vancouver, BC, as well as a technology transfer center in Prince George, BC.Approximately 340 scientists, engineers and support staff work at these locations.ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact.
