Emerson's PlantWeb® digital architecture and Ovation® expert control system to optimize operation of John P. Madgett StationPITTSBURGH (December 17, 2003) – Emerson Process Management announced that its Power & Water Solutions industry center has been selected to modernize the control system at Dairyland Power Cooperative's John P. Madgett Station (JPM) located in western Wisconsin. Under the $3.1 million contract, Emerson will replace the existing analog control system of the 370-megawatt, coal-fired generating plant with Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture. Emerson's Ovation® expert control system, a key component of PlantWeb, will control and monitor the plant's turbine, boiler, burner management system and balance of plant. The new control system will be further enhanced by Emerson's AMSTM Suite, a bundle of applications that delivers real-time predictive maintenance and optimization information to plant personnel. The contract also calls for Emerson to install Fisher® valves with FIELDVUE® digital valve controllers and Rosemount® transmitters, as well as an integrated simulator. The simulator, which replicates plant operations, will be used to train operators, and is an important component of the overall solution Emerson is providing, according to Ron Oscher, marketing vice president for the Power & Water Solutions industry center of Emerson Process Management. "The issue of older workers retiring and taking with them their decades of experience is a well-documented problem in a number of industries. But the integrated simulator provides the Dairyland Power Co-op with a means to train and re-train JPM operators from the same knowledge base," explains Oscher. "Furthermore, operators can test different strategies by manipulating the variables. This gives them valuable hands-on experience for responding to a wide range of operating scenarios." The contract calls for he simulator to be built by mid-2004 and for the control system to be installed in the fall of 2004 during a scheduled outage for a turbine overhaul. PlantWeb digital plant architecture is an automated solution that delivers asset management, process control and management execution through intelligent field devices, standards and scalable platforms, and integrated modular software. The Ovation expert control system gives users higher levels of plant availability, reliability and environmental compliance. From basic control and monitoring to plant-wide integration, Ovation offers seamless communication with intelligent field devices and integrated asset management software to deliver the power of predictive intelligence. Embedded advanced control applications, tailored to meet the challenges of electricity generation, ensure full optimization of critical processes. Built using the latest commercially available hardware platforms, operating systems and network architectures, only the Ovation expert control system stays new in the face of rapidly advancing computing technology.
