WILMINGTON, N.C. (March 11, 2004) —Rulmeca Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of motorized pulleys for bulk handling, recently assisted customers in finding custom solutions to outfit machines with parts necessary to keep the equipment up and running. A U.S. ship loading terminal operator required three huge motorized pulleys to retrofit a 40+ year old crawler-mounted bucket wheel excavator with conveyor belt drives no longer available from the original manufacturer. A U.S. open pit operator needed a spare motorized pulley for a recently built FAM excavator. In both situations, Rulmeca was able to help. Each 800H (31.5² diameter) motorized pulley weighs more than two tons and delivers up to 180 HP. “Our motorized pulleys began driving bucket wheel excavator conveyor boom and tail belts in both new installations and retrofits in the 1960’s,” said Mike Gawinski, Rulmeca Corporation President. “We are proud to offer solutions that allow companies to update their equipment and keep their machines doing the jobs they were built to do.” Since the drive’s motor and gearbox are enclosed within the pulley shell, the motorized pulleys save valuable space on mobile equipment such as bucket wheel excavators. The hermetically sealed enclosure increases system reliability while the self-lubricating gearbox design reduces costly maintenance expense. Operator safety is improved by the unit’s “dead shaft” and enclosed drive design which eliminate pinch points. Rulmeca’s unique external brake option provides material hold back on pivoting conveyors such as excavator boom and tail belts. Applications include all bulk conveyor operations. Rulmeca motorized pulleys come in a variety of standard dimension and options to be customized depending on application. Pulley diameters range from 8.5² to 31.5² with powers ranging from 0.5 to 180 HP. Maintenance is minimal, requiring an oil change only every 10,000 operating hours or five years of single shaft operation.
