EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – January 31, 2005 – igus® Inc., the leading developer of Energy Chain® cable carriers, provides safe delivery of data and power to automated machinery in a multitude of configurations—even in side-mounted applications—by employing modular separators. Igus Energy Chain Systems® accommodate various installation designs and all forms of data cables, energy supplies and hoses by using interior separators which isolate the conductors to keep them bending freely and prevent tangling. Not only is the quality of a cable important, but a key consideration for optimal service life is the arrangement of each cable and hose within the cable carrier and the space each is allowed. For example, electrical cables need at least 10 percent surrounding reserve space or clearance, while hydraulic hoses require 20 percent.Igus specifies the maximum cable and hose diameter for each Energy Chain series in its catalog and online at www.igus.com. This is determined by analyzing the inner height of the Energy Chain or Energy Tube. However, the nature of the cables, dynamics, expected service life and other variables factor into this determination. Igus design technicians are available free of charge to specify the requirements for any application.Rules to always follow when designing an Energy Chain System include:
  • cables and hoses with significantly varying diameters should be laid separately using modular separators;
  • the clearance height of a compartment with several similar cables must not amount to more than one and a half times the cable or hose diameter or they will tangle;
  • cables and hoses must be able to move freely at all times to prevent tensile forces from being exerted at the radius of the Energy Chain; and
  • horizontal separation is required for high speed applications (travel speeds more than 1.64 feet per second and more than 10,000 cycles per year).Chainflex® continuous-flex cables from igus are designed specifically for installation in an Energy Chain System. Chainflex cables are available in more than 600 sizes and styles. The line ranges from power and control cables to air hoses data cables, servo cables and fiber optic cables. Igus performs more than 35 rigorous cable tests in all types of conditions, to ensure the elite performance of Chainflex.
